Not going to comment on the weirdo bit! ... this was taken at Pennan last night .... we saw some nice vertical white rays early on when I texted you but they faded after twenty minutes or so .... but it looks like we both missed out on the main event .... that's the problem, it doesn't make a noise so unless you're out and about at the right time of night it's easy to miss .... it's where the north coast dwellers score.




If I see a decent show I'll drop you a text .... you need to plot somewhere you can zip to in the pickup that gives you a clear view out towards the Moray coast ... the hill with the radar near Boddam maybe if you can avoid the light pollution from Peterhead

When they’re strong, I can see them from my back door if the neighbours behind have their lights off, thankfully they usually do. You won’t be getting any fancy photos from me though, the phone is hopeless with darkness.

That's not my pic by the way ... posted on my FB page by a friend .... I'm likewise with the photos .... just use my phone now .... gave up on carrying cameras as we could go on a month's road trip somewhere exotic and come back with three dodgy snaps .... we're just not the picture taking kind so a camera is just ballast.

Back to the northern lights...for the first time I've just seen them from an oil platform. Crystal clear night, north of Shetland and managed to find a corner on the right side without blinding floodlights. Not the most spectacular display I've seen but might well have been if I could just have got them to switch the lights off.

SOLAR WIND, INCOMING: A large Southern hole in the sun's atmosphere is spewing solar wind toward Earth. ETA: Oct. 20th. Solar wind speeds could top 500 km/s, sparking auroras around the Arctic Circle.
