Just out of curiosity:
Who has ever had to mount their spare wheel on a road trip?

At my age I hardly get to mount anyone. At least a spare wheel would not run away.

Not so far, and it would be extremely unpleasant when the rack is loaded with luggage. That's why I carry a can of goo and a foot pump.

Which would also be buried under luggage.

I have had to help others change to a spare on two occasions in the past 10 years. The main issue as I see it, is if you have wires and your recovery service tow you to the nearest garage, will they have the skills to fix or replace the tyre without damaging the silicon sealant and will they have balancing cones?

Yes. Flat noticed just before leaving hotel but obviously after I had spent some time securing luggage to rack and with other cases and clothing tucked away on top of tool tray doh

Never but I prefer to have it on there for longer trips.

Problem with the goo stuff is that it doesn’t always work and I’ve heard you have to replace the tyre following it’s use. That said, I have a spare wheel that has remained unused for 9 years. Hope I’m not tempting providence.

Yes I have. On one occasion we were only about half a mile from home after being out all day. Still had to knuckle under and change it.

Only ever had punctures on hard used work vehicles and even then, just slow punctures with nails etc fixed without need of the spare.

That said, should anyone within reasonable distance of North East Scotland require a spare for their spline wheeled Morgan, I’ll happily loan one from my fancy set, part of the reason I bought the set of wheels was for the “ just in case.” I wouldn’t want to cart it around all the time though, the furthest my Morgan will be from home is still only a few hours, I’ll get the butler to bring one to me should I ever need it it.

Several years ago, we set out on a bright sunny day heading for the Derbyshire peaks planning on finding an idyllic pub for a celebratory lunch. It was our wedding anniversary.

We had been cruising along the A50 (dual carriageway, 70 mph speed limit) for around 10 miles when it happened. The near side rear tyre had deflated. Fortunately, I was able to get the car on to a slip road where there was less traffic and what there was had slowed down a little. A few minutes with jack and tools and we were on our way again having fitted the spare.

Somehow, the shine had gone out of the day by then so we headed for the closest pub. We didn’t make the peaks that day but at least we stayed in control of our day and didn’t end up waiting for a recovery service.

Spare wheel = essential item.
