Cheers Andrew ..... will try it with no cable slack .... doesn't feel like it's far away so that may be enough ... though I must admit to always being wary of loading the throwout bearing and it wearing out because it's constantly turning ... however, as a test to see just how near the clutch is to freeing completely it should be fine .... if it's close I can juggle with the various adjustmemts to find it.
Did you find the throwout bearing lasted ok on your 4/4?

Hi again
My first experience was with Escorts, crossflow engines and cable clutches. Very similar set-up to my 1978 4/4 with 4 speed box. Followed article in Miscellany to convert to 5 speed Sierra box.
All clutch adjustments followed same guidance, which is detailed in Escort Haynes manual. Sold the 4/4 in 2000, but still know the car, which is on the same clutch renewed at gearbox change.
Hope this gives some confidence
Andrew

Cheers Andrew ... will give it a go tomorrow.
Would still be interested in the clutch lever movement measurement if anyone out there has one.

My clutch has oft times been found to be stuck, due to lack of use, sigh ! Just a case of warming the engine then jacking the rear wheels free of the deck, starting the engine in gear, and using the brakes to break the bond betwixt driven plate and the polished faces of the flywheel/pressure plate.. using a bit of heel and toe. Marginally brutal but a tad easier than removing the engine to get in amongst things..? Once freed off I polish the faces by slipping the clutch just a little... Works every time. So far..(-:
I appreciate that this may not be related to your issue K, but just thought to throw it in to the mix lest it might be the issue for some reading this thread.

Simon has retained the rod linkage on my conversion. I'll take some photos at the weekend, including position of the arm.

Luddite .... I had considered that the new plate might have stuck to the flywheel .... the clutch change was one of the first jobs I did, so it's been sat for the best part of a year while I rambled through other bits of the rebuild ... will give that a try.
TBM many thanks for the impending pics and measurement. The more info the better when it comes to fault finding.

K, you caught me out, I had thought you had already driven your 4/4 minus wings etc and found the clutch to be dragging somewhat....! I bet you a fiver it the driven plate is just stuck... I have suffered this on occasion after a few months on non-usage in our climate.

Sorry to contradict but if the clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel, you would not even get it into gear with the engine running.

Sorry, when you referred to the clutch not “fully” disengaging when going for a trundle in your original post, I took that to mean you were suffering clutch drag or creep. My neighbour’s MGB suffered a stuck clutch recently after a long lay up and it was overcome by the jacking up and braking method. Good luck.
