My Brooklands steering wheel gets what I would call a harmonic rattle at about 2900 rpm on a balanced throttle. A finger pushed on the wheel centre stops it, but it is a medium hard push. Does anyone else get this and if so have you solved it?

My current action is putting layers of a fairly stiff foam down the wheel centre so that the column will push against the foam and stop the rattle from the rear. Building up the layers slowly and all the time ensuring the clip on action is not overridden for obvious safety reasons. Reduced the rattle but not fully solved. Its an annoying rattle compared to rest of the rattles and noises the car makes!

2 things to check:
- I once noticed the center bolts getting loose. Make sure those are tight.
- similar to your foam idea, I place a bit of masking tape (just enough) around the spindle and then mount the wheel. It acts as a slight buffer from rattles. Not too much, and it will tear easily if you take the wheel on and off frequently.

I posted some time ago on this forum about using a rubber bottle stop in a similar way. The rubber is about 1/16" longer than open area between the steering column and the back of my steering wheel. Works really well for me, though I don't have a Brooklands steering wheel. When the car is parked in the garage I pop the wheel loose to allow the rubber to 'recover' so as to keep it from taking a compression set.

Thanks, so it looks like I am on the right track! I have other cars with QR wheels but this is the only rattle I have come across. However none of the other cars have a V twin!

I’m usually gripping the wheel so tight that it doesn’t rattle, but my teeth do. I do like the look of my Brooklands wheel but having driven a friends M3W with a padded wheel, boy is the padded one a lot more comfortable to hold.

Off topic but sort of related . . . . . my Brooklands doesn't suffer from steering wheel rattle (yet) but at most rpm the off-side mirror vibrates to the extent that it becomes virtually useless. Usually the nearside mirror is unaffected and never are they both affected at the same time i.e. by the same revs. has anyone got a simple solution?

Yes, put on mirrors with shorter stalks.

My car has short stalk side mirrors which don't vibrate at all. But the downside is they have restricted vision as the occupants shoulders get in the way. Wondered whether a centre mirror has been used successfully by anyone?

A central mirror is a big help with rear vision I find. I have one fixed to the central support on my Fairbourne screen but there are ones on a stalk mount that work well with the small aero screens as well. Back on topic, I vote for the masking tape fix as well, it works for me.
