I have posted the Norvin in earlier posts Peter, the Triton is the one for me, as John said it is pure petrol head porn and I can smell the Castrol R from here.
What that Hardly unit is doing in the Featherbed I have no idea..

No apology necessary Peter, I owned a couple of Nortons but never had the good fortune to ride a HRD.
I think the best bike I owned was my last one, a BMW R850R, a grand machine for a then 50 year old with ever stiffening frame... For me m/cycles were much more of a raw experience than any car I have owned.. Though the Morgan was the next best thing when I decided to hang up my leathers...I would be happy to have an old m/cycle taking up a corner of my garage, even though I would be unlikely to ride it..

Same here George very happy memories and sounds and smells take you right back there instantly I find, Goodwood Revival does it for me every time all that running old time machinery going for it on track just overwhelms the senses at times.

Apparently the reason so many frames were available with the big hole where the engine used to live is that they used to house Norton's big 500 single, and as they were the engine tuners choice when the Formula three club racers needed an engine for the rear of their Cooper framed car, they had to buy a whole bike as Norton refused to sell an engine independently. Consequently, many bought a whole machine simply for the engine.
The reputation they engendered with a twin duplex frame that rode like a 'featherbed' became popular when people shoehorned twin cylinder Triumphs in to replace the single. The best of both worlds in young mens eyes, and became the machine of legend it deserves to be.
I'd like to think that sticking a sidevalve engine from a previous generation was done simply because you can, as despite their rugged simplicity, they were very outclassed in the cafe stakes..! Oddly enough, it's probably made a nicely profitable end result too..!

That's the UL big twin Harley Flathead motor ... a wonderful reliable slugger of an engine ... though it doesn't belong in that lovely frame .... as for being a cafe racer, depends how far apart your cafes are .... couple of thousand miles and the UL would likely win by default ahead of a trail of broken Bonnie motors!! 🙂
