This is taken off a glass plate picture found in a Cornish photographers a few years ago apparently before they built the college this was the accommodation and training college 1863.

Fascinating.

Looks much modified.

There were similar 'roofed over hulls' in the Menai Straits and at Dundee (Dundee one still there ... called the 'Unicorn' if I remember ... but I might be completely wrong about the name even tho I went round it just a couple of years ago 🙂) .... always intrigued me the way those old wooden warships that seem from far history with their muzzle-loading cannon and sails survived into the age of nuclear subs still in use.

Looks as though the Britannia is anchored astern of and joined to the Hindostan which would have made it 1864 onwards, as in this picture. I was lucky to spend a short time on the last HMS Britannia.

One of our earlier neighbours did a tour on her too back in the early 80's the same house as our present ex Bandie strangely enough as they were not known to each other.

These wooden MOW are such fabulous builds - I shall never forget our trip over The Victory in Pompey and having read all C S Forrester's Hornblower books it really all gelled together, the ex RN guide was brilliant in his delivery .

John was onboard when they had to take Britannia up to Noss to turn her around he said it went pretty quiet on the bridge at the time..
It made a nice change for him after his tour on Broadsword as No2 in the Falklands though, he had some great experiences we were lucky to share with him including personal photos of Etendard's coming through below mast height..

In the first pic -looks a bit like Mr Dysons yacht in the background.

Not wishing to be picky, but it was HMY BRITANNIA (Her Majesty’s Yacht) as opposed to ship. I visited her in the Caribbean several times in 1994 when the ship I was serving in was Royal Yacht escort.

Hulks were also used as prison ships ……..

Here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB3cdsQC1Hc of the firing sequence for the Cannon on HMS Victory and about halfway through the video a rolling broadside. During the Battle of Trafalgar when Victory broke the line and engaged her first target she fired a Port and a Starboard broadside and then rolling broadsides as targets came to bear in the space of 30 minutes, imagine the intensity of that at close quarters. The third Britannia (not the one in the picture) was sixth in Nelson's line at Trafalgar suffering light damage and casualties. When the Migs made the "run of death" down San Carlos sound and dropped their bombs they fired their cannons blindly at us on the beachhead to lessen their weight to try and out run the Rapier Batteries as they rose over the headland.
