Hi
Recently my original MAF died after about 77000 miles, the original Lucas ones (as far as can tell) are no longer available. I sourced a replacement from FleaBay, the voltage trim screw did absolutely nothing , so it was sent back . I then purchased another(Britpart) one. I set the Voltage to 1.8VDC which resulted in a super rich mixture. I eventually got a second hand one which works fine.

As a result of this I would advise all members to build up a stock of original parts for any defunct engine EFI System.

I have decided to remove the original system & replace it with an aftermarket system, the front runners are :- Canams, Emerald and Megasquirt, so prior to fully committing over the winter, I was wondering if any other members had went down this path and what is recommended & why. I know there will be a power increase but that is a secondary benefit . I also know a lot of criticism around Megasquirt is reliability - if I decide on this,I will be buying from a company that builds the ECU & provides a full kit ,

Thanks for any insight you can provide

Cheers

Alan

Was that the one off eBay fit £200? I was looking at that one. I have a cheapo one for the mot. It passes emissions but runs rubbish otherwise so I refit the original one after the mot.

I had a friend plug his laptop in and what it was doing was anything but control the fuel mix, it wasn’t £200 just below £100 , the first one was a sand casting ??????

Tornado systems only deals with the original Lucas stuff which essentially 80’s technology. MOTs are not shifting the goalposts but the strictness of enforcement has definitely moved up a cog. The only drawback I have been able to establish is , there’s something going through parliament which is critically looking into “Car Modifications” if you install aftermarket gear on your car such as an ECU ( Brakes, Suspension, Shocks , Panhards, 5 link etc etc ) please refer to :-

https://www.gov.uk/government/consu...ing-vehicle-standards#tackling-tampering

But as long as you don’t use a Morgan Dealer there’s not much chance of them finding the brain. To reiterate what I’m looking for is reviews on the various aftermarket EFI systems

Interesting about those Tornado folks. Only about 30 miles from me. Might warrant a visit…..

Have you spoken to them?

I thought they covered the engine right up to later iterations and they also work with standalone aftermarket ECU's.

I talked to them when I installed an Omex ECU in my 4/4 but as they specialise in the Rover V8 I didn't go forward with them.

I got rid of the lucas system from my +8 1985 Flapper, and replaced it with the Canems system ,it is easy to use and you can alter any of the mapping fuel and ignition (Removed the distributor and fitted a trigger wheel and coil packs). have a look at the website lloydspecialistdevelopments.
If you want any more information you can contact me and I will try to answer your questions

There is an interesting article by a TVR owner about his journey from moving from 14Cux to Emerald (lots of rolling road sessions required) to GEMS (not for the faint hearted).
