With winter approaching its time to get out my refractometer to measure coolants freezing point. ![[Linked Image]](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8b/2020_Refraktometr.jpg) Just a droplet placed on the slide is enough for a very clear indication of a fluids specific gravity. Available with scales to measure everything from wine to cat's urine, mines also scaled for battery electrolyte s.g., the most accurate indication of a lead/acid batteries state of charge. Available through Amazon and eBay for around £20.

I used one regularly in our lab in the cigar factory. Testing the paste used to hold the leaf on the outside of the cigars. Plant based cellulose type adhesive in water. A handy, easy to use device. A viscometer was used to test the flow of the adhesive.

We use these for testing antifreeze levels in heating systems.

Also used for measuring the amount of sucrose in orange juice, there is a specific measuring scale, Degrees Brix!
