I can't believe the amount of hype that is now being given to electric cars, given the following:-
1) Range limited by battery capacity and driving conditions 2) Range anxiety for the driver brought about by fear of running out before reaching the next available charging point. 3) If you have to rely on parking in the street and possibly not always outside your own house, how to you do at-home charging? 4) If you live in a block of flats the same applies as in 3 above. 5) Time to take on adequate recharge is excessive 6) The existing underground cabling is not capable of handling the increased demand created by mass electric car charging. 7) The environmental issues around the disposal of batteries at the end on their life and the cost of replacements 8)The carbon footprint produced when building an electric car is apparently greater than when building an IC engined car.
In view of the above, I agree with John V6 that hydrogen is the only way to go and this should have the most time and money spent on it now rather than waisting time going down the electric route Indeed, exactly (except for 5: the latest systems are plenty quick enough, but the network of vv fast chargers needs to grow - per 2) ! ) Will flat dweller

An EV owners perspective...
1) Range limited by battery capacity and driving conditions - ----- So is an ICE Car. Most EVs now offer a realistic range of 250 to 300 miles.
2) Range anxiety for the driver brought about by fear of running out before reaching the next available charging point. - ------ Same with an ICE Car.
3) If you have to rely on parking in the street and possibly not always outside your own house, how to you do at-home charging? - ------ Charge at work, at a commercial charging point or on a lamp post charger. 4) If you live in a block of flats the same applies as in 3 above. - ----- Same answer
5) Time to take on adequate recharge is excessive - ------ Rubbish. My experience is that charging from 50% to 90% at home takes about 4 hours, at night. At a Tesla Supercharger charging from 6% to 90% takes 45 mins and costs about £20.00
6) The existing underground cabling is not capable of handling the increased demand created by mass electric car charging. - ------ Rubbish, as previously explained. 7) The environmental issues around the disposal of batteries at the end on their life and the cost of replacements - ------- Rubbish, very few EV batteries have reached their end of life: Tesla guarantee the battery for 8 years and when replaced they refurbish and use in their domestic "Power Walls".

Although I own an EV and enjoy driving it I'm not convinced that EVs are the future, or that they are not. I used to believe that hydrogen was the better option, but I no longer hold this view. A very large amount of money is going into developing Green Petrol, made synthetically from water and atmospheric carbon dioxide and green electricity. Latest estimates are that this will be commercially viable at no more than the cost of fossil gasoline. Green Gasoline means that the specialist car market has a bright future, from Morgans to F1 and not forgetting light aircraft.
I'll keep the Tesla for 3 to 4 years and see what makes sense. I'll keep the Plus 8 come hell or high water.

I am serious consideriing leasing an EV in the next 12-18mths. I have obviously done some research.
It would probably be a Corsa E as the lease costs are around £200 a monrh and I could probably afford that.
Real world range is around 170miles meaning I would have to recharge every three days. My commute is a 50m round trip.(My current petrol Corsa manages about 390 miles between fill ups. A fill up takes about 5 mins every 7 days as I do it at 6.15am)
The Corsa take 8hrs to 100% charge on a 7kw, or 30mins to 80% charge on a 50Kw.
There are no lamp post chargers in Rushden, and only 4 'fastish' charges (22kw). No 50kw or 100kw ones. We have a further 12 x 7kw ones. However they're all on the local retail park, and it often takes 30 mins just to get on the park, let alone find a parking space with an available charger. Also not on my route to or from work.
My workplace has no chargers. MK has 65 rapid 50KW chargers, but every three days I would either have to get to into MK an hour or so earlier (6.00am) to get charged before I started work at 7.00am, .or resign myself to spending few hours afterwork driving round trying to find an empty charger and getting home late. I couldn't leave the car there all day, as it would mean a long walk to work and back, and they charge £10 an hour after the first 90 minutes.
Thankfully, I forked out £2000 a few years ago to have a dropped kerb put in, so can park on my drive (alhough my house deeds say otherwise).and charge there overnight every three days.
So it will work for me, but I'm quite unique on my street having off road parking. Without it, I wouldn't consider an EV as the infrastructure is just not there.

Wow, I find some of the claims above amazing! I can only assume they are put forward in good humour. I hope so, but the use of words like rubbish to address real concerns begins to sound like a brexit fervour. Links that don't support the actual statement? Everyone can charge at work? Most evs have a realistic range of 250 miles. Etc.etc. What a laugh Nick
I am prepared to submit a line by line refutation of the claims but don't really want to bother

I've worked in a lot of offices. None had parking for everybody. It was based on "entitlement". At my last office there were probably 80 spaces for 250 staff .
To even think that there would be charging points for every space is cloud cuckoo.
It's fine being an early adopter of EVs when few are fighting for chargers, but there will come a point where selfish owners will sit on a charger all day.
That alone is reason to be cautious
Someone retired with no off road parking is screwed.
