Nothing that surprises me in that article, so I suspect the program won't offer much.

I find it hard to see the virtue in hybrid cars, they seem to me to be overly complex and heavy, combining the worst of both EV and ICE, but they perform well on the WLTP.
The Bentley Bentayga Plug In Hybrid declared a WLTP consumption of 83mpg. Really?

I have always been sceptical about hybrids, largely driven by the fact that I had a Lexus RX400 for 3 years to save company car tax and actually it was a lot less economical than my previous diesel Range Rover. This was simply a reflection of the fact that I did 40,000 miles pa at that time 98% of which was motorway for which hybrids make no sense - other than it saved me on car tax.

However, I was interested to see a Harry Metcalfe review posted somewhere on TM about the latest Plug in Hybrid Range Rover where he achieved an average of 68mpg over a distance of between 8-9000 miles. With an electric only range of circa 60 miles it would be possible to do all your local motoring cheaply on battery and also makes sense from an urban air quality standpoint. You also have a car that can comfortably eat 800 miles in a day with only one quick stop for fuel. I take your point about being over complex etc, however if used properly PHEV do seem to offer something to improve air quality, reduce operating costs/ fossil fuel use whilst still being able to be driven long distances without inconvenience.

The biggest issue to the environment is not whether we go from ICE to EV that is just a good feel smoke screen, the real issue is the human population growth in both numbers and affluence. How you feed and water it whilst supplying all the things that it demands to have as the population lives longer and spreads out. However, there is a solution on the horizon the rapidly increasing suicide rate amongst young people who are constantly being told the world is coming to an end and there is no future for them.

It is a horses for courses moment.

PHEV seems good to me if you do a lot of mileage on motorways/A road plus the hop to town stuff.

If
you can charge at home(ish) so you can take real advantage of the PHEV/BEV bounty.
even better if you harvest your solar power.
you do short trips that can be done within EV range.
you can use the ICE for longer range flexibility (accepting BEV can do long range if planned accordingly?)

If all you are doing is long range I still feel a good E6 Diesel makes a lot of sense. The MB 300de phev models seem a great combo to me.

I do not get the value of the non-plug-in hybrids at all. Only way of charging them is through the ICE in the first place. Small benefit from in-city smog but marginal real long term benefit?

At this point the uncertain future profile of business travel means I am not pulling the trigger on any change and will sit in my ballistic earth flattening couch for a bit longer (so avoiding the waste of profligate purchasing) while everyone sorts themselves out. I keep looking at Tesla's but then listen to the V8 and it's simply no fight. Reduce my travel is the answer. I will use teams/zoom/faceplant/webex/Skype/etc etc etc more on my machine.

Mind you I just built a new heavy duty PC and today my new laptop arrived. The laptop power supply is 65w (and it runs and charges inside this limit) but the desktop is 1600w. I might need to use the laptop a bit more often before I boil the ocean.

Not just that Bruce but also the doom and gloom about various potential volcanic armageddons, plus the potential of imminent war on the EU's eastern boarder, Ukraine, Taiwan, The Falklands. When war kicks off, nobody cares about global warming.

When wars do kick off proper full size one's not the Falklands scale of things they really do the world a big favour by reducing the population, another 1914-18 and nobody would be contemplating their navel wondering whether they should be planting trees or not or going electric..

The fact the oil fields in Iraq were burning for months seems to escape some folks and Bush spending months on end with B52's landscape gardening Afghanistan all to no avail, happy days boys, keep on smiling and focus on your Morganing

We are the first generation not to have to fight for our country and as such totally indulged and we owe it to our parents to enjoy our freedom but balance our pleasures responsibly with our surroundings as I'm sure most on here do.
