Interesting figures. I wonder what they had the aircon temp set to? And did they pre-condition the car before setting off? AIUI it's a lot more efficient to lower the cabin temp but to use the heated seats/steering wheel for comfort. Of course, for us rusty-tufty Morgan drivers we'd naturally get much greater range simply because we don't expect to drive around in shirtsleeves when it's -10C outside smile

To be honest, I haven't noticed a drop in efficiency in my Corsa. It tends to get about 360miles (about 43mpg) before the petrol warning light comes on, time after time. I've tried driving it as economically as possible, or thrashing it down the motorway and I get a maximum of +/- 10miles difference on a tank full.

According the the article, they used the VW website to get the data.

Everyone can charge at work? Most evs have a realistic range of 250 miles. Etc.etc.
What a laugh
Nick

I am prepared to submit a line by line refutation of the claims but don't really want to bother

I'm laughing at your laughing smile
"Everyone can charge at work?" No. But if you needed to commute to a work car park there is a reasonable chance there will be charging available. Heck I now see folks poking cables out of their office windows to their cars! Personally I dont drive to work, and at my work there are a couple of chargers to be used. And I expect chargers to continue to proliferate...

"Most evs have a realistic range of 250 miles. Etc.etc. What a laugh"... Isnt the highest selling EV in the UK the Tesla 3? Claimed range for the standard model 305 miles, say 250 realistic max?

Mind you I share some of the EV sceptism (eg why the focus on private cars vs shipping, trucks, central heating etc). But remember, there is no Planet B.

I think there's some seriously muddled thinking here, sorry.
Firstly you equate the claim " everyone can charge at work" with a massively reduced claim that if you commute to a work car park. You state that at your work there are a couple of chargers. How many drive there? If it's only 20, what is their "reasonable chance" of getting the bay?

Tesla may be the highest selling car but that doesn't mean most cars have Tesla range. They are two totally different matters.

Watched Top Gear yesterday. They point out that hilly country massively affects range. He said something like... it's a bit much when you are driving a 90T pound car and the sight of a hill induces panic....

Yes, it's a laugh alright.

"Fortunately hardly anyone needs to do journeys like this with any particular frequency, and those that do would probably either keep an ICE car or hire one as and when needed. For anyone with a sub-50 mile daily commute I can't see range being a big issue even in winter for most EVs apart from the very small city cars like the Smarts, Hondas, and E-ups."

But this depends on ice cars being available when needed. If they are banned we will all be forced to take hours longer to do any sizeable journey.
We stopped at a motorway services on m5 recently. Big car park. Hundreds of cars. We parked next to the charger bays. There were four. They were all occupied.
In the twenty minutes I sat there (while wife went and bought a sandwich and coffee which we had in the ccar) at least 6 elec cars rolled up, looked sadly at the bays and went and parked. They sat watching the bays. You could be there hours, let alone the aggro of trying to get to a vacating bay before the others who have the same aim.
It's hopeless.

Did they not have regen switched on then? Or was their route only uphill? Perhaps they were trying to drive up Escher's staircase? grin2

Fortunately there really isn't a problem. People who don't want to buy an EV don't have to, they can stick with their ICE cars for at least the next 30 years or so. The last new ICE cars will be sold in 2030 and will be perfectly usable for 20 years or so. My 20 year old Landy is fine so there's no reason to believe a 2030 car won't be equally as durable.

By that time the tech will have caught up and people can make the switch once they are comfortable. Or buy an FCEV or something even more high tech.

Me, I'm quite happy to be an early(ish) adopter. I don't need long range and I really like the idea of dirt-cheap fun motoring powered by the wind and the sun. I figure I've got probably another 15-17 years driving in me, the Mini will be fine for that, even if the range degrades. By the time I'm 77 I daresay I'll be happy just to pootle a few miles each way to town.

Who says they are going to be banned? I've never heard this mentioned anywhere?

I thought the whole thrust of evs was because ice engined vehicles are to be banned. Maybe you and I at our age will have the luxury of different vehicles for different purposes but the world we are leaving for the young ( which is what has got us into this whole area) will not be giving them the same choices if we allow ourselves to be chanelled down a narrow path.
TG used loads of regeneration, it was just hilly. smile
I agree with most of your post Tim (well I hope the prediction), except the "dirt cheap fun motoring". Your Morgan gives you that but not a new elec car which costs twice the price of it's ice equivalent and obligates me to contribute towards your purchase (gov grant).

I should rephrase banned to read... unavailable to purchase new smile
(I.e. banned from being manufactured)

I don't think there will be any shortage of ICE cars to drive for donkey's years. They will fall out of fashion much faster than they'll wear out. It's petrol availability that I think might be a limiting factor, there will be far fewer petrol stations around in 15 years time. The range anxiety will be for ICE, not EVs smile

The Mini Cooper SE is actually cheaper than the Mini Cooper S. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, more power and more torque.

As for subsidies, a few quid off the price of EVs is paltry compared to the £16bn p.a. we give to support the fossil fuel industries in tax breaks and funding, see:

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02847-2

Edit to Add: as for running costs, the Morgan costs me 25p/mile in fuel, £300 a year insurance, and £270 in VED. The Mini is 9p/mile in winter, nothing in summer, £150 insurance, £0 VED.
