[2001 4/4 1.8 Black Top Zetec.
[Had a lovely drive out in the mild weather, came home and parked up in the garage. A few days later it wont start! The fuel pump is not working. New battery, new fuel pump relay, new fuse, all connections checked visually. Imobiliser light goes out when ignition is turned on, inertia switch pressed in. Have run out of ideas. Can anyone help please? Thanks in anticipation, cheers, Brendan.

Have you tried a supply direct to pump from battery?

Hi Jack - I haven't. Might be a good idea. Do you know which pin to connect to? I don't seem able to find a fuel system wiring diagram.

On my older car it is a White/Purple positive switched feed to the pump, it might be worth putting a voltmeter on there first to see if it's live. I'm not too keen on having a spare floating live feed around a petrol tank, maybe I'm just too careful.
The pump is twenty years old now.

Brendan I have no idea of your Morgans fuel system where the pump might be located whether in tank or close to it.... on my 86 +8 the pump is mounted above the tank thus easy to get to. White and Purple as Richard suggests fits with my poor memory, but you will find wiring colour codes here should you have any confusion..

Thanks everyone, my pump is of the in-tank variety and a pig to change I suspect!

As Richard says, start with a check for a voltage at the pump connector. And don't discount the possibility that your new relay is faulty.

It’s a tank out job to change, assuming you can hold of one
You’ll probably have to swap the pump itself rather than the complete assembly

I think the pump shown is what I used but with a different flat strainer instead of the canoe type shown.

My guess is that an in-tank pump may be fed through a connector that could also take in the fuel gauge, perhaps both using the same earth (black). That perhaps being the case then green/black may be the fuel gauge thus looking to find the white/purple as being live with the IGN switched on would seem a worthwhile check..? Assuming there are no other safety devices/switches between the ign switch and the inertia switch you mention.

In my car the oil pressure has to be present for the pump to continue running and on fuel injected cars there can be other measures used to ensure the engine is running to ensure that the fuel pump electrical supply is maintained.
