The kiss principal works well for a simple thinker such as I, and as such, given that most folk will be aware of the positive and negative battery connections, the requirement to observe correct polarity, and additionally may well understand a simple light bulb circuit with a switch, then perhaps in discussions it might be worth adopting NEGATIVE as a standard term for the part of the circuits route back to the battery negative terminal...?
How would that work with positive earth cars? Maybe resorting to the water analogy would be better...flow and return?

Well today is a read letter day. After months of dithering and digesting all the advice given, I finally fitted a new fuel pump - this being supplied by Glencoe as suggested by Ivormog ( thanks!). The pump is from a Mk 1 Ford Focus and is a direct fitment so not too difficult to fit into the tank assembly. My mog started first turn of the key. Tomorrow I will be driving out of the garage with a massive grin on my face! Thanks to everyone who offered me advice - I got there in the end!!! Cheers, Brendan.

Great news. It’s always appreciated to get final feedback.
As a matter of interest, did the fuel tank need to come out and, have you applied volts to the old pump now it’s out to see if it is an intermittent fault or seized?

Tank remained in. Central ash strut removed. Bit of quality carpentry to replace with 'through loose tenons'. These can be removed again in the future should the need arise but integrity of the frame remain unaffected - clever but very tricky! I have tested the old pump and it is definitely shot!
