My nine year old Golf diesel can do around 600miles on a tank so things will get bad if I get range anxiety. grin2

I need convincing Tim. When I visited my local mini agent a few months ago he told me the mini ev was only with the S as far as 50 mph and that he thought the ordinary cooper was a more realistic comparison. The prices he gave me at the time wer ... Cooper 17,800, cooper s 21.300, elec 31100.

I'm open to being convinced ... but strangely can't find any figures on the web???

What can you tell me?

Carwow lists the Cooper S at £28750, SE at £28,500. I paid £28k for mine with Level 2 trim. Level 1 is a couple of grand cheaper, Level 3 a couple more. There was absolutely no chance of negotiating any discount.

The dealers don't seem very keen to sell Electrics - mainly I suspect because they can't make any money on after-sales stuff - but apparently one in every 8 Minis built is an SE so there's a lot of demand.

With us they were keen to sell us a maintenance package at "only £20/month" that would cover all our servicing needs. I pointed out that the only servicing required was a brake fluid change and cabin filters every 2 years, so that was really quite expensive. We didn't take advantage of their offer.

Realised how they've done it! They've just increased the price of the petrol versions massively. I checked the price of my Abarth today and it's nearly twice the price it was when I bought it five years ago!

I watched a program called Despatches today..I had recorded it last week. In the first couple of minutes you see Boris stating all ICE cars banned 2030. He doesn't say all new cars....

Lastly the program claimed that the gov subsidies to the elec car industry were £ 1.9 Billion in 2020 and an additional 620 million this year...not quite the modest figure I had imagined...:)

No idea if the program has gravitas of course.

Despatches is in my experience pretty sound, but sadly that can't be said of BJ. They are banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in 2030, not all of them.

With downright lies being accepted as the new truth, who knows what to believe...?

For those who would like the future to be electric, there might be found some interest in the contents of this vid on solar power and distribution..?

It would take a smarter and better informed person than me, but it would be interesting to see what the break point would be between the CO2/environmental impact of replacing millions of cars, the civil engineering/materials cost of the charging infrastructure and the generation impact over say ten years versus reducing mileage on the existing infrastructure. Taking into account a true 'well to wheel' thorough audit of all the aspects.

If you take into account the larger environmental impact of manufacturing an EV and the payback time .... if the idea is to reduce the CO2 entering the environment as a matter of urgency .... it would be ironic if, over this critical couple of decades, just everyone reducing their mileage by 10 or 20% would make a greater actual practical 'real-world' difference than the current push to churn everything over that has the car manufacturers and civil engineers rubbing their hands at the billions to be made out of our enforced consumption of the 'new normal'

The problem is that fiddling around with car emissions in a few countries won't make much of an impact.

I honestly can't see anything much changing in my lifetime, apart from relentless global warming, endless migration and border conflicts turning into wars.

We're all doomed.
