Bruce(Britmog), so is your 32 feet mark where you have the tape pictured? If so, it looks like you have a little more width as you follow around the drive. The only way I would get my M3W to turn in 32 feet is with a little speed and a bit of a drift.


Calum (RedThree), so at least my test was within MMC spec, and not all that conservative. I guess that is why these little cars are great for hill climbs, so so great on hairpin turn tracks!

The 32 feet is from one side to the other across the apex at the inner part of the U where the body of the tape measure is and the left wheel when turning right is on the white tape at the end of the tape measure. My +8 makes the turn with about 2 feet less each side but with the wheels at the same point in the apex of the U.

If I interpret turning circle correctly from the handbook the radius would be approximately 24 feet? All fascinating stuff

Bruce, I think I follow you now. And you are correct. The 44feet is actually my turning circle diameter; the radius would be half that at approx 22 feet. It has been a while since my geometry.

Well I'l glad I could help, even if you ultimately weren't able to come up with a design that works. Obviously the only solution is to buy up the land from four of your neighbors, tear down their houses, and then you may, just might, have the space you need for a Morgan size turning circle.

I have seen more crazy things happen in regards to space required. A home in an exclusive waterfront community had a wife who really missed having a lawn he could admire, as though the beach sand was not enough. She convinced her hubby to by the home next door (1991 prices) for $10,000,000.00 and tear it down to make a lawn. They did it!! So a bigger turning circle migh not be as far out of line as one might think.

This is in the heart of the largest collection of historic, Federal Period homes packed in together in America. Rather than buy up adjacent properties, it would be more fun to negotiate right-of-ways through alleyways between them for egress. My own little 'Italian Job' F1 circuit.

I'll come up with something. There's actually plenty of room (by Newport, RI standards) to park a few cars but I'd like a design that provides the 3W a narrow slot through a fence into the small private garden beyond for safer weekend keeping and TLC. Although, who knows, if parts become impossible to find, it'll one day make a fine garden sculpture.

Newport also has its share of 'cottages' that have combined properties at insane prices for insane reasons. They're on the other side of town with Larry Ellison, Jay Leno and Judge Judy. At least it's becoming an auto enthusiast zone. Surprisingly, I've only seen one other 3W in many years,

Can you indulge me as a UK based property guy and tell me more what a federal period home is? New one on me so intrigued!

Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the newly founded United States between c. 1780 and 1830 and particularly from 1785 to 1815. Very much along the Georgian architecture lines, the White House is a good example.
