When I‘ve got my Plus4 in 2018 I was looking: in which cars was the original home of the engine?

The idea was to get more information about how to service (and repair) the engine. Or get an enginecover. After a short look around in the early time this year was a little trouble and I think: time to look again.

So I can‘t found a european car with a 2.0litre, 150/160 BHP and no-turbo in the FORD range. An, only a Fiesta. But in Germany the Fiesta are all small engined and Turbos. So not really a chance for a helpful (Haynes) manual. I also wonder: MORGAN has allways engines from
big selling RWD cars. So why now they transform an exotic FWD?

A look in the enginebay told me: clear. FORD. Engine code DOC420.

So I ask Mr. Google and wonder - it‘s a MAZDA! Plus4 powered by MAZDA…

The Mazda 121 is a badge engineered Ford Fiesta - I spotted one locally a couple of years ago and did some digging.

My understanding is that the Gdi engine is only used in the US Ford Escort/Focus.

Ford has a controlling interest in Mazda which it saved from bankruptcy in the 90's. Ford engines are shared.

I believe the n/a version of the engine is also used in a Ford/Mazda car in Thailand. Effectively it's the same motor used over here in the Focus ST and very similar to the even more powerful Focus RS. I junked the n/a GDI version in my 2014 Plus 4 and inserted a turboed Focus ST motor which fits straight on to the Mazda Mx5 gearbox. Never looked back and now have loads of torque and 280 bhp at one bar pressure.

Good morning René.

The GDI engine is known as the Ti-VCT (GDI) 2 Litre it was the engine supplied for the Ford Focus in America from 2012 - 2018.

If you google "2012 Ford Focus S.E" and "2012-2017 Ford Focus 2.0L Duratec GDI" you will find information on cleaning MAF sensor, cleaning throttle body, removing spark plugs etc.

I found this out a while ago whilst I was trying to source the engine cover to prevent water lying in the central valley. I never did get to copy Dave W's very nice cover but now I have the same problem on my XK engine.


Here for a good time not a long time!!

I read about it and I‘m fascinated… and just had it on my „must have list“. But with the MOG as my first RWD car (and tendency to heavy feet) I think it‘s over my possibilities. And as I think also the German TÜV.

There was a good 4 page article on buying & modifying these engines in TKC magazine Nov/Dec 2020.
This issue also included adverts from Burton offering tuning parts for these & other Ford engines and Power Torque who had for sale new Mexican 2.5 litre engines.

Yesterday I found the magazine in my letterbox. After paying 13,-EUR incl. shipping (to Germany) and a three week of waiting it wasn‘t that what I think about. The article is more about the DURATEC engines. The good thing: when I understand right - yes our engine is a MAZDA, the DURATEC and the GDI. And when I understand also right: the GDI is an unboosted (no turbo) ecoboost and an evolution to the DURATEC.

In the Magazin there also a lot of ideas to more power. But for the usual use (and usual filled pockets) nothing real news things.
Have flash, may be a cam… and you get up to 180bhp. The usual area for a flash and the manifold (and cat and exhaust).
