SOLAR WIND, INCOMING: A stream of solar wind is approaching Earth. ETA: Jan. 8-9. The gaseous material is flowing from a southern hole in the sun's atmosphere. Arctic auroras are likely when the solar wind arrives.

SUBSIDING GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A G1-class geomagnetic storm caused by the impact of a CIR on Jan. 8th (see below) is subsiding now. The storm is over. Arctic auroras remain possible as Earth enters a moderately fast stream of solar wind flowing behind the CIR.

CIR IMPACT SPARKS BRIGHT AURORAS: A co-rotating interaction region (CIR) hit Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 8th, igniting some of the best Arctic auroras in years.

The northern lights were out here last night ..... wandered out for a look ... fairly faint to the naked eye but there are some good camera shots taken locally ... as normal, being out at just the right time makes the difference ... was visiting friends so only had limited opportunity to be antisocial hanging around outside 🙂 ..... good thing is we can look forward to them getting stronger over the next few years

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible today, Jan. 17th, when a CME is expected to graze Earth's magnetic field. The storm cloud was hurled in our direction by a C4-class solar flare from sunspot AR2925 on Jan. 14th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

SOLAR WIND STORM: A stream of high-speed solar wind hit Earth during the late hours of Jan 18th, sparking a surprisingly strong G2-class geomagnetic storm. Wind speeds are currently approaching 700 km/s, some of the highest values of young Solar Cycle 25. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras mixed with moonlight on Jan. 19th.

SOLAR FLARE AND RADIO BLACKOUT: Sunspot AR2929 erupted on Jan. 18th (17:44 UTC) producing an M1.5-class solar flare.

During the flare, a pulse of X-rays ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout over South America, Aviators, mariners, and ham radio operators in the area may have noticed unusual propagation effects at frequencies below 20 MHz.

The explosion also hurled a CME into space. We are still waiting for images from SOHO coronagraphs to determine if the storm cloud is heading for Earth?

GEOMAGNETIC FORECAST: On Jan. 22nd, a coronal mass ejection (CME) will pass close to Earth and might deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field. Polar geomagnetic unrest is expected when the storm cloud arrives, bringing bright Arctic auroras.

BIG SOLAR FLARE: Sunspot AR2929 erupted again on Jan. 20th (06:01 UTC), producing a powerful M5.5-class solar flare.

During the flare, a pulse of X-rays ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout around the Indian Ocean. Aviators, mariners, and ham radio operators in the area may have noticed unusual propagation effects at frequencies below 30 MHz?

WEEKEND AURORA OUTLOOK: Updated modeling by NOAA forecasters suggests that only one CME will pass near Earth in the days ahead. A single glancing blow is expected on Jan. 22nd or 23rd when a CME from the Jan. 18th M1.5-class solar flare arrives. The impact could spark bright auroras?
