One of my personal heroes is Hugh Dowding, without whom our defence would have been a shambles. Shame there's not been a truly comprehensive biography to my knowledge. Over the years the fighter egos and tales of derring do have thankfully been revised to take account of the amazing part played by the people who organised the groups, formed the tactics, engineered radar, built the planes and myriad other amazing achievements - all with few resources and tiny timescales without being able to test anything thoroughly. Astounding.
