Jon .... there's a marked difference between what an appropriately set up digital camera can pick up and what you can see with the naked eye .... we get truly spectacular photos of the aurora posted up here ... when you can be stood at the same spot seeing nothing.
The lights can be seen as south as Wales. but naked-eye level events are very rare ... and only when a really strong charged stream is active ... not been one of those lately.
Always good to be out on a clear starry night anyway 🙂

SOLAR WIND, INCOMING: A stream of solar wind is approaching Earth. Estimated time of arrival: Feb. 28th. The gaseous material is flowing from an irregular hole in the sun's atmosphere, and could spark Arctic auroras when it reaches our planet?

GEOMAGNETIC UNREST: Earth is inside a stream of solar wind flowing from an equatorial hole in the sun's atmosphere. First contact on March 4th sparked an outburst of auroras over Alaska and now geomagnetic unrest around the Arctic Circle.

A CME PASSED BY EARTH YESTERDAY: During the late hours of March 10th, a CME passed by Earth. The near miss sparked auroras in Northern Europe.. Another CME is coming, but it won't miss. Details below:
THE NEXT CME WON'T MISS: A full-halo CME is heading directly for Earth. ETA: March 13th. Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory recorded the storm cloud leaving the sun just hours ago.
This CME is the result of a long duration C2-class solar flare near sunspot AR2962. Normally, C-class flares are not considered to be strong. However, this one lasted nearly 12 hours allowing it to pump plenty of energy into the CME.
Moderately-strong G2-class geomagnetic storms are possible when the CME arrives. NOAA analysts are modeling this CME now, and improved predictions may be available soon?
