I‘ ve undone my dashboard for a try of a homemade one. I want to fit a set of loudspeakers and a maplight and keep my factoryfitted dash untouched.

It‘s much more easy than I thought. In cause I like the original style, there is no changing in the main things (in the moment).

But the maplight… Behind the dash I found some unconnected wires. The main wire of interest is a green one with a usual 6.3mm female flat connector, paired with a second black wire. Black is clear „earth“ or „ground“. But the green one?

And as I noticed in another post, the frontlights are wired in the classic „LUCAS wiringcode“. Follows MORGAN here the classic British ways in the full (or most) wiring?

… in the moment the battery isn‘t fit.

Green cable coding usually means live with ignition on. In this case it could be the unused heated seat feed. Easy to check with voltmeter. The map light wiring is already in loom though. Look for unused connectors brown/green and black routed from power socket cabling.

Front loudspeaker cabling is also part of wiring loom and can be found behind footwell panels where speakers are factory fitted when spec'd. Black/white and black left hand side, black/red and black right hand.

On my roadster the unused map light wires are on the passenger side above the plastic under tray where there is a pre drilled hole that I assume is for a map light

Hello Richard, hello John,

Great, thank you, that helps. The green wire was direct in first sight, I think I use it, if there is power on.

The usual frontspeakers in the legroom where factoryfitted and wired, but I‘ve got a second small pair in the Moment fixed at the undertray.
I‘ve done an upgrade at the brown „DIN“ radioconnector in the past.

So now it looks like an easy DIY.

Now, the dash is undone and I look forward for to fit again.

As told the green wire is ignition switched „at full ignition“, the key in position II, there is a wiring from the powersocket which is free and it‘s coded brown/red, I think that‘s where the factoryfitted maplight is connected. But this is allways powered and very heavy fused (15A).

And there are a lot of other free connectors, but all with power every time on it.

To cut a cable isn‘t my idea in the moment. So is there a hidden connector (and free?) which is powered with the key in position I?

Hi René, according to the wiring schematic the only items that are powered in the first ignition switch position (ACC) are the horns and radio. There is a single light green/white cable from ignition switch (pin 4) that splits at the fuse box (after fuse 6, 10 amps) to feed these two items with cable colours remaining light green/white. Your only option is to identify either of these two cables and splice in. I would suggest the radio feed would be the easiest/nearest.

Hi, Richard, thank you for this information.

I think I‘ll feed the maplight in the easy way by the green wire.

Why don't you use the connectors Morgan intended for the optional map light, as already suggested? They are coloured brown/green and black, 200mm from the power socket that feeds them. There should also a red/orange cable near the power socket which I believe is live with sidelights on (probably there for illuminated power socket). This may be another option if you are worried about leaving map light on accidentally.

Hi Richard,

It‘s a homemade problem. The maplight of my choice is a AVANTI with the light at the side. The long one. But instead the told 47cm it‘s 53cm. To fit it I made a dash. The maplight is fitted on the left side of the watch. So the wiring runs over the corner of the instrumentpanel.

Not the best way. So I‘m afraid to earth the powerwire. The original wire for the maplight is always powered and heavy fused with 15A.
So I wish a wire which is of when the car is parked. And clear: I lined a fusebox in (5A).

Now the dash is fitted and thank to you I use the red/orange wire. Only the undertray must be fitted (after drilling some holes).
