Standard 8 and 10 engines were sidevalves, however my understanding is Morgan converted the engine to overhead valves and stuck a pretty rocker cover on with the Morgan script...then became the standard special....also used in the Triumph Mayflower prototype...

I was unaware of Morgan using the Standard Special engine in production before WWII. Can you point me to the reference? I can't find anything amongst my books!

According to the Morgan book by Gregory Houston Bowden, published in 1972 by Haynes: pages 75-77,

In May 1939 came the announcement of a new engine for the 4/4 specially produced by the Standard Motor Co.. It had all overhead valves with a capacity of 1267cc and became standard on the Coupe but available for an extra £5 on other 4/4 models. It gave 38.8 bhp at 4800 rpm but could be run up to 5500 rpm. It had a Solex downdraught carb and the engine was mounted with much more rubber to give a smoother ride.
Later on in the book, it goes on to say that as very few cars were fitted with this before the war, after the war, it appeared to be a new feature to the general public.

Thank you. I was wrong. i blame old age!! I have found my reference material (transcript of the hand written Dispatch Log). It shows 37 SS cars were produced pre war. (15) 2 Seaters, (4) 4 Seaters and (18) Coupes.
