You are right about the 30 days as you should be in your job.From personal experience and indeed as the OP has discovered, "wet weekend" is perhaps being over nice to trading standards. You are there to look after the little man and your comment suggest that he isnt important enough for you.

You are being completely disingenuous to Trading Standards & it sound like you don't know what their job role is.
They are not there to look after the "little man" round here their main investigative focus is organised large scale crime & major health & safety issues.
For consumer advice, trading standards direct you to the Citizens advice Bureau, its specifically what they are there for. If they notice a pattern of complaints about something in particular they will get Trading Standards to investigate. A bit like going to your doctor for a headache, not going straight to a brain surgeon.
