Paul,
hydrogen burns well in ICEs, I expect over the next 5 to 10 years we will see hydrogen conversions offered for classic ICEs, much more sense in my view, than EV conversions. As hydrogen is likely to be the replacement for DERV in HGVs it will become more easily available.

my son had a Ford Focus ST with water methanol injection. It works best with turbo or supercharged engines as it both cools the air/fuel charge mix and raises octane value, allowing higher boost pressure. As an aside it also lowered exhaust gas emissions to the point the car still met MOT requirements with the catalyst removed, probably because the water/methanol improved burn efficiency.
Water methanol injection was used extensively in the supercharged aircraft engines from the early 1940s, along with in Germany, nitrous oxide injection. The Brits, with up to 150 octane fuel available, didn't need nitrous and made less use of water methanol.

I remember now reading about home made versions of this a few years ago. It seems to me that the engine system in my car is a closed system so any advantage from hydrogen is removed by the load on the alternator so there should be no performance gain. However, I can't comment on if it produces cleaner exhaust...I wonder if there's a test for that? Nick PS I wonder how happy insurance companies would be about a container of hydrogen in the engine bay, and installed by me an amateur?

I designed and built a water injection unit for my MK2 Cortina in 1980 and it worked a treat. Same power and more MPG, or more power and same MPG depending on the water volume injected.

Nick, the emissions test at MOT will indicate cleaner exhaust gases- Im not evangelical about it, but as I recall reading, the combustion is more efficient and hotter with Hydrogen, therefore more of the nasties get burned, along with carbon deposits, resultung in a cleaner engine, so potentially more efficient. As for a container of hydrogen, there isn`t one, its a bubbler producing on demand. Its classified as a fuel supplement, so no need for insurers to be advised/make any difference to risk. It didnt raise any eyebrows at my last MOT either. As for diy installation, its effectively providing about 2-3 amps across a weak KoH solution- essentially a small battery, about a fifth of the size of your existing. Hardly a net loss from excess loading of the alternator. Indeed, cheap usb chargers draw more, and ive experienced those getting worringly hot to the point ive had to remove them for fear of fire. Ive seen keen amateurs incorrectly wire in their latest ICE system and burn a motor out. My experience over 50,000 miles is improved mpg (approx 10%) and cleaner(smell test) emmissions on both my diesel tt and the morgan over the last 2 years. No problems experienced with either engine.

Ah, well, that wasn`t asked about. It`s in the bowser I tow about of course. Takes a long time to fill, cos ther`s only one of them
