Haven't been active on the forum or with the Morgan for a bit. Got the ' 70 4/4 out last night for a quick evening run. The car was great after a bit of carb adjusting, However this morning on another run, the Smiths black face tachometer didn't move from zero. Obviously since the car still ran, the white wire from the ignition to the coil is intact which makes me think there is some internal problem with the tach. If the problem is internal, where do I get it fixed, or where to get a new identical unit, or where do I find a used unit. Or better yet what is the problem? Is there any troubleshooting/testing that I can do to determine the problem? Is there some sort of fix that can be performed by myself? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Its a Smiths RVI unit and it its peculiar to Morgan, 4 cylinder specific
I think new ones are NLA and have been for some time.
Apart from the basic connection checks, the best thing to do would be to send it away for repair.
Speedy Cables did mine for me, they also made a switchable mod for when I converted the car to electronic ignition

Some details on tacho wiring here for RVI/RVC units from GoMog. Might be worth wiring check.

As Arwyn said, speedy cables are your best bet however the time they take to fix and return stuff doesn't match their name.
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg

Not sure if you have simiar repair facility in the USA for vintage/classic instruments but another recommendation in the UK is Speedograph Richfield. They clearly work with RVI/RVC instruments and offer exchange as link below, which should reduce downtime if they have suitable in stock. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.speedograph-richfield.com/assets/images/RVI-1410-01-AF.jpg)

Try Caerbont. They were set up when the Smiths factory closed. Ex employees who should have knowledge of the Smiths gauges. Never used them so no idea of turn round etc.. www.caigauge.com

Another option is Chris at Spiyda https://spiyda.com/tachometer-electronics.htmlI fitted one of his internal conversion kits in an old Smiths tacho's a few years ago as the calibration was iffy, but you need to be handy with a soldering iron & then have to calibrate with an audio file download Chris is really helpful and will fit & setup for you, he's in the West Mids, UK

When my mid 80`s +8`s rev counter started playing up I bought an identically faced "digital" replacement, which had dip switches to configure it for an 8 cylinder engine. I did a write up at the time which may be on GoMoG with some pics. Once I had the new one working, I sent them the original to be repaired, and when I received that back in working order I fitted it and keep the digital one as a spare... The digital came with green lighting which was rather nice, but all the other instruments are white lit, Carebont sent me a white LED to replace the green one in the digi instrument. Not the fastest folk to deal with but they got the job done. https://www.smiths-instruments.co.uk
