I’ve had two people, that I know, recently return from journeys in France.
(Neither were driving Morgans)
One had carried on using his GB plate, with no difficulties. The other had fitted UK plates.
Once in France, he was asked, on more than one occasion, ‘Are you from Ukraine?’

I’m confused over the current requirement and who imposed the use of the UK plate.
Any ideas, as we’re hoping to return to Brittany later in the year,

You will need a UK sticker, doesn't necessarily have to be on the number plate, it was Boris's idea to emphasise the countries unity after Brexit ???

To comply with the law we put a UK sticker on but I see many people still using the GB sign either out of ignorance or defiance. Not worth rubbing the Gendarmes up the wrong way for the sake of a sticker.

Something to do with showing solidarity with N.I. I understand.

As Jersey is not part of the UK we retain the GBJ plate - which I can see causing problems in a few years if stopped by a bad-tempered Gendarme

IMHO what a load of nonsense, however, I’ll stick a UK plate over my prized 1950s black/silver bumper mounted GB plate.

Yes, it was to make N.I. more inclusive.
Bear in mind also that although it is legal to have it incorporated alongside your number plate, if you use a separate one, to fully comply with the law, it has to be a white oval background 18cm x 13.3cm with black lettering. II know a lot of people have in the past, used the more pretty chrome letters but they are not legal.
I have stuck my sticker onto a shaped aluminium plate to which I have bolted a couple of 15mm water pipe clips to the reverse.
It simply clips onto one of the rails on my luggage rack when needed.

The Gendarmes really couldn't give a damn!

And, to be fair, as the name of our state (for better or worse) is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' the GB sticker hasn't been correct since the Twenties (presumably it was used before then and no-one felt the need to change it?) .... however in these days of Identity Politics it had become an issue for some people. Don't throw your old one away ... demographics dictate that NI will likely vote for re-unification sometime in the future and it may or may not go back 🙂

Ps ... looked it up and the whole country plate thing started in 1949 .... presumably at that time GB was felt to be suitably all-encompassing.?

I shall just stick a cheap pvc UK plate over my proper GB plate just like Budster. When the good people of Scotish Land choose to leave us what will we have then? Can't have E for England as Spain has that.

I have one of Uncle Melvyn's posh stainless steel GB plates fixed to the luggage rack with a clamp. I turned it round and fitted the appropriate sized UK sticker.

When we change back, all I have to do is turn it round again.

Until Macron or their union tells them to be difficult. Had it before now with boats when some british / French political argument has caused the gendarmes or douaine to be wound up to full bureaucratic Frenchness. Got inspected by all three inc local plod going through every bit of paper and doing so at several ports the last time round and that time it was about union fears of redundancies so they felt the need to prove their worth.. Best response is to put both plates on.

Have also heard of Britsh cars being targetted though never experienced that myself
