I don't think speedos 'have' to over-read .... they are 'allowed' to over-read (and by a big chunk ... 10%+6ish miles an hour .... showing 50 while you're only doing 40!) .... what they mustn't do is under-read .... so car manufacturers tend to err on the side of caution and make them 'fast' ..... not a requirement though (and my Dedender is spot on actual speed) .... what it means is that a driver could have an accurate speedo and get a ticket for drifting to 41 in a 40 limit .... which I think is a bit harsh ... especially as that sort of error could be down to the particular brand of tyres ( even of your usual size) that your fitter chose to put on your car with you being none the wiser

Just 1mph over the speed limit s cause for a"NIP"..? He did say "real" limit", not speed limit. Here in the US the actual limit may be 55, but the real limit (enforced) is more like 70. Though these days I have no idea what it is. Probably 75 or 80.

We have got used to the lax enforcement of speed limits in some parts of the country because differing attitudes to speed by Police Forces. In Wiltshire, which has the lowest number of Police Officers per capita and no large areas of population other than Swindon, the Police enforce 30mph limits in residential areas quite vigorously, something I strongly support. There are no mobile camera vans or fixed cameras, other than on the M4. Interestingly since they withdrew roadside controls and limited Traffic Police to the M4 and a few other trunk roads the level of accidents and fatalities has decreased, from almost 400 in 2006 to less than 300 in 2018. The data is here.... http://www.travelindependent.org.uk/area_54.html Perhaps the fact that most rural roads and minor A and B roads are in such terrible condition only and idiot would speed. I believe this is a deliberate conspiracy between Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police.

Howard,I got done for speeding last year, (near Malton North Yorks) the speed camera got me doing 57mph on a 50mph road (A64). The summons stated that NY police operate a 10% plus 2mph leeway, resulting in me going on a bad boys course. The camera van got me the week lockdown ended at 0615hrs on a near deserted road.

Yep ... the 10%+2mph leeway was always touted as the accepted threshold for getting booked ... seems a minority of forces have broken ranks with this for one reason or another ..... one of the things I dislike about the proliferating 20mph limits is that I know I spend far too much time monitoring my speedo and therefore correspondingly less time monitoring the road where my eyes should be.

K One of the advantages of modern cars is that as one passes the gateway signs one can check one's speed and hit the Limit button, then you can focus on avoiding the pedestrians or whatever.

David Byrne I got caught out doing a couple of mph over the 30 on a beautiful, bright sunny day with no other cars or people about. It was a quiet country road and I will admit that my mind was on the beauty of the day not watching the speedo, anyway, bad boys course followed and I have to say that I would have gladly paid the £80 to be able to attend the course without the stigma. It really reminded me of the basics that I had forgotten over the years but of course I am now more likely to run people over as I stare at the speedo instead of concentrating on driving!!!
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg

of course I am now more likely to run people over as I stare at the speedo instead of concentrating on driving!!! Not the first time I've read this in this thread (and others). I really really really hope you guys are joking! The idea that people in our age group and levels of experience cannot drive in a 20 or 30 mph limit without having to constantly check the speedo to the extent you are unable properly to monitor other road conditions is more than a bit worrying - especially for those of us who have done a speed awareness course and have been taught the correct scan sequence If one really can't drive along at or just below 30mph without drifting up and over the limit, then one can simply adjust the speed downwards to give a larger margin of safety. It's a limit, not a target after all, and it really isn't much of a hardship to drive at 15 or 25 rather than 20 or 30 in built-up areas. I'm as much a fan of hooning around as anyone, but deserted NSL roads away from civilisation are the place to do this, not in the middle of a town, or indeed on routes like the NC500 where there seems to be a high density of nobheads putting everyone in danger.

The fact that you have collected a ticket at all tells you loud and clear that your awareness level is not good enough imho, my last was in 1986 and I have tried not to get another one by using just a little more concentration.
By all means take advantage of your onboard speed limiting devices (as I do) but I think they are responsible in part for people becoming lazy drivers and unaware of the prevailing conditions.
I also like stretching the Plus 8 legs in the right area at the right time of day and it certainly wouldn't be on the OP road.

Though these days I have no idea what it is. Probably 75 or 80. Exactly. It was 69 in a nominal 60 real limit 68 as they confirmed when they sent the NIP.( 10%+2) . More to the point it was on a completely open moorland road with no housing or junctions anywhere near. Plod with a hand held just as I came over a slight brow. Last one Rich was 1990 and it was the first one in 60 years.. As for the " no one has a reason for speeding" - . As I told the person running the awareness course, I enjoy going fast. But the point that really annoyed was that the siting of the trap was absolutely nothing to do with safety and everything to do with trapping tourist drivers as on the NC500.
