So allowing for 15% losses (estimates range from 10 to 20% actual losses depending on the charger you use) this indicates that you'd be putting 183.5 / 1.15 or 160KWh into the battery. Their 10,000miles a year figure means this would have to deliver 833 miles of range, or 5.2 miles/KWh.

This is a reasonable figure to achieve with slow-speed urban driving in warm weather, but efficiency drops markedly when the weather is cold, and if there is any high-speed (greater than 50mph) work you can forget it.

Running an EV is cheap, but it ain't that cheap.

As a comparison to EV.

My partners Hyundai i30 1.6crdi (2007) does 60mpg. At current local price of 176.9p ,it equates to £101.95 per month (based on 10K per year).

My Corsa 1.2 (2002) does 43mpg. At current local price of 161.9p it equates to £130.12 per month (based on 10K per year).

According to my records off my charger and I do at least 800 miles per month in my tidler of an EV

My costs as an example

Sept £12.42 195kWh
Oct £14.49 253kWh
Nov £17.72 256kWh
Dec £8.16 115kWh.
Jan £22.08 292kWh
Feb £16.01 219kWh
Mar £12.43 187kWh

Still on the cheaper tariff at the moment which helps a heap.

Thing is I do 3 shifts so can't always charge overnight on the cheaper tariff and I have Solar and home storage battery too, that adds in the mix, and obviously I occasionally have time off like over xmas new year etc, certainly cheaper than my XC60 used to be that was fluctuating between £150-£200 per month heck knows what that would have equated to lately. For longer range thanks to ULEZ I picked up an 04 V70 for the old trip away (doggy holiday) bit of a fright in March filling that up before we had a week in Wales.

If you need a new car, then it's hard to avoid considering an EV - with prices starting at around £25k for a new EV, there's a lot of choice too.

As a note of interest, a Morgan 3 wheeler on the road price is £43k (no options) which is not far off the price of Model 3 (£46k)... A Plus 4 is £66k, more expensive than the top of the range Model 3 Performance.

My Tesla is 41p cheaper per mile than the car it replaced and I have saved £8,200 in fuel costs since buying it - with no servicing costs, no road tax and no congestion charge, which are also significant savings.

I didn't buy it to save money or newts as it happens - just as a decent commuter car, which it is. Amusingly, it has a longer range than my +8.

Top man Mark, that indicates an average of around 3.6 miles/kWh at 800 miles/month so pretty reasonable for the winter months.

Yes, the price is quickly becoming attractive to a much wider customer base.

One useful factor to help calculations for potential purchasers is that 4 miles/KWh is a reasonable average to expect from an EV driven in normal conditions. 3 m/Kwh if you give it some beans or use it on motorways, 5 if you cruise around and drive it gently.

A gallon of petrol contains the equivalent of around 40KWh, so an average EV should give the equivalent of around 160mpg.

I really enjoy switching between the Mini SE and my Morgan and Landy. Drive the EV and it's amazing just how easy it is to drive. Get into the others and you immediately understand what you've been missing in terms of driver involvement. I reckon they are the perfect combination to own. Morgan for summer driving fun, Landy for winter expeditions, EV for everything else.

It is getting better, but still out of reach for a great many people, and the current second hand market is fetching inflated sums due to the shortage of new vehicles

Which perfectly illustrates a point made recently in another thread IIRC - Sam Vimes Boots

New cars will be out of reach for a great many people generally. Certainly buying a new Morgan will be. Despite this nearly 2m new cars were registered last year and the average saloon cost £37k - so some people are managing it.

I haven't read your other point.

It was something Tim (Hamwich) brought up. I'd not heard of it before but it made sense.

Here if you're interested. No worries if you're not.

Neilda ... it's a reference to a passage in a Terry Pratchett book ..... poor guy has to buy cheap poor quality boots which wear out quickly and need replacing lots of times in the same time period that a rich guy's expensive good quality boots last ..... so boots end up costing the guy with less money more than the guy with lots.

K

Ps .... you got there first TBM .... trouble with being a slow typer 🙂
