the new normal economic conditions remind me of the 1970s.. To hell with the future, live for today.

People change cars way too often anyway. Would you change your fridge/cooker/sofa/bed/tv every couple of years?

Make the right choice and there's no reason to change because modern cars are all much the same anyway.

But it does mean choosing right and finding something which still feels good over time. I'm nine years into my current Golf. I still love it, even though it's far from perfect. That's character for you.

Very true. 22 years for the Morgan, 20 years for the Landy, I kept the Honda for 7 years and only got rid of it because I retired and didn't need it any more. I felt a bit guilty at getting rid of the Fiat after only 6 years, but I reckon the Mini will do at least 10 years.

The people we know that change their cars frequently also do the same with their partners, they use to have more money then us Not the sort you would seek any sort of advise from I'm sure you all know a few.

Both are costly pastimes it would seem.

Make the right choice first time and your first consideration should be - will it be easy to move on and desirable when the time comes, this does not necessarily apply to choosing a wife of course.
Perhaps a wife on PCP in the future as a damage limitation exercise

With the changes to the work world.
More time on Teams/Webex/Zoom so less travel
Increased price of petrol
Desire to be more green with less travel
WFH reducing commute

All being well this should result in being able to keep a car longer and so avoid waste. The issue will be the reduction of vehicles trickling down the pre-owned channels. "I see trouble ahead".

I tend ot change cars fairly regularly, but that is mainly because I buy old and cheap (Under £1K) and then run them into the ground until they get beyond economical repair. Not the Mog of course - that will stay with me until I can no longer drive (probably longer).

Bikes are different, one I've had for 30+ years, one for 20 and the other for over 10.

Had the current Mrs Phil for 19 years but it feels like longer.....

That is good going with the bikes Phil and sound reasons for changing the cars.

Sounds like Mrs Phil is a keeper too especially as she has a spanky new Golf arriving - you chose well

The trouble with being a massive petrol-head and not also being massively wealthy is that there are so many really nice/good/desirable cars and bikes that I have a list far too long of the ones which I think I will want to keep for ever and for-go the rest. What actually happens in reality is that about 9-12 months after getting such a vehicle I have developed green eyes for the next "Perfect long-term car" and I therefore end up changing cars far too often. My wife is the same (in that she also changes cars frequently - not that I change the wife every 9-12 months!). In the last 4 years we between us have had 13 different cars! Bloody hell, that's even worse than I expected.
