So, today I leant across the back of the car to adjust the hood cover and my bare arm touched the luggage rack. I could feel a very slight electric shock as I touched it. Its hooked up to a battery maintainer but can anyone offer a possible cause?

Quite possibly static electricity build up on your body discharging to earth?Often created from wearing synthetic fibres.
However, I would also inspect the mains side of the battery maintainer to ensure the insulation is perfectly intact.

I have a CETK. The isolation is dreadful. I get a buzz if I touch the car too. I must get around to throwing it away….

I unplugged the maintainer, moved the extention lead from where it was and plug it back in, and the shock has gone. Should have touched the rack first to confirm if it could have been static but too late now. Either way it's stopped for now. I'll just keep an eye in it. Thanks for your input.

I've noticed the same too, but as the garage is all on modern circuit trips and a fast RCD I'm not too worried

It's not as powerful as licking a PP3 battery that we did as kids

I don't know why, but I still do that; maybe its due to inflation🤷‍♂️

Hi Rog don't throw it away just use a relay. But don't forget to earth it correctly.

I wonder if some of these findings are due to dodgy/home spun garage power installations. There is a maximum distance apparently above which the local house mains ground is not acceptable. The armoured cable sheathing ground feeding an outbuilding is broken at that end and a local ground rod used instead for the benefit of local RCD and safety in general.

If Jon's does it too then it might just be a 'feature'’. l will wear my wellies, it’ll be fine

Quite possible - when I had my workshop overhauled last year the electrician insisted it needed it’s own ground rod separate from the house - a 1m copper rod sunk into the earth.
