Which sort do you have, Dave?

Plus one for the unit that Paul shows in his post. I got mine from Demon Tweeks circa £90.00.

Do they work instantly or do they have to find satellites? My satnav can sometimes take ages to "wake up"

Mine searches for satellites but usually under one minute.

Interestingly once only it lost all satellites mid journey, which was weird.

In theory, there are at least 4 GPS satellites observable from any location at one time (4 is the minimum you need to get a fix). But as the receiver is looking for the radiant energy equivalent of a candle at 100m, it's easy for the signal to be dissipated especially by thick cloud. That's why it can take a few minutes to latch on to sufficient satellite signals to get a usable location.

The US Government does reserve the right to switch off civilian access to the GPS satellites without notice ....for matters of national security (guess that would be a pretty sure indicator of impending nastiness of a major scale!) .... but they're unlikely to do that purely to bugger up your trip to the seaside.

They downgraded the system during the Gulf war conflict for Civilian users, we were carrying out a monitoring exercise at the time wink The military one's were fine.
This was way before every Tom, Dick and Henrietta had one of course.

It makes a lot of difference where you mount them too in terms of speed of acquisition and real time tracking i.e. accuracy..

p.s. I am talking about pure Satnavs which is the same platform for the devices you are talking about.

Hi, I bought one of these from eBay( item number 154949384864) as I suspected my speedo was inaccurate. It fits neatly in the bottom right of my windscreen without obscuring my view in any way and is very accurate. Also it can be removed from its mount in seconds should the need arise.
