Coming home down the M4 in the later part of the day I find dozens of middle lane morons even when the road is almost clear late in the evening. Often a couple of taxi's I see repeatedly just rumble alone in the middle lane, 75mph, nothing in Lane 1 going back miles ditto Lane 1 in front. It is just p__s poor driving. I will stay in lane 1 behind them them in formation for a moment until they have really noticed then just swing around them through lane 3 and back to 1 as long as the traffic is clear. If no one is going to enforce it then what's the point in having the rule. The taxi that is the worst offender I have on one occasion undertaken when it was literally clear for miles. I did use my horn to indicate my presence. I know it may have infringed several rules. Its a judgement and I am guessing even Policepeeps have to make a few of them each day outside of pure law (often for the good).

I just hope the passenger in the back opened conversation but in truth I doubt it makes any difference to drivers like that. That's the real issue, they know it and choose to be fools and don't care unless they do get a warning letter or tug. I am guessing it is a little tiny happy rebellion going on in their head? Their one way of acting out against the state. Or maybe they don't have a licence, in which case they also don't have insurance, or they have no UK legal licence and hence training. Or they are just carp drivers.

One of the reasons I do send in the worst clips is that I want it checked if they do have papers and the warning letter can cause a check for disqualified drivers etc as I understand it.

Which is exactly why I ensure the hard shoulder is clear, so I have somewhere to go if it does happen. Obviously if the motorway is otherwise clear then an L3 overtake is the correct and safer option, but whenever I use motorways it seems to be 3 lanes full of cars moving at steady speeds with relatively low speed differentials and sub 2-second spacing, so there isn't a clean route to overtake. If my lane happens to be moving a bit faster than the lane on my right I'm not going to worry about it.

Most motorways seem to work in reverse these day. Lane 3 is packed with nose to tail traffic, Lane 2 is emptier but contains a few idiot middle laners and Lane 1 is empty bar a few HGV's.....

In India lane 1 is the fast lane, the middle lane is normal and lane 3 is occupied by slow moving trucks and busses. The hard shoulder is for motorcycles and motor rickshaws..... Rental cars from Hertz, etc, come with a driver.
