I don't know what the answer to all this is, but I can't understand how in my area yesterday, just driving down the same road, on one side of the road it was £1.75 and on the other side just 500 yds further along it was £1.83 and both petrol stations were ESSO?

The treasury is also raking in bigger tax income . A nice earner that will be spent to help those in need?

They'll probably have to save that to counteract the massive drop in income when we all turn electric......

They need the extra fuel duty to pay for all the useless PPE that they are now having to destroy. They'll have road pricing up and running by the time significant numbers of people have switched to EV, and they can use that and fuel duty as a double whammy to further persuade people to give up ICE.

I'm considering dumping the Tesla and going back to ICE, whilst I still can. I don't really trust Tesla and their parts availability is worse than Morgan's.
Yes, it is cheap to run, it is quick and comfortable, but it is anything but engaging.

I'm waiting for the new Mercedes AMG C43 PHEV with 50 real world miles on the battery, 2000cc 4 Cylinder engine from the A45, AWD and 400+ bhp.

Can't say I blame you, we are considering changing the Mercedes Cabriolet for a diesel version (get the wife to fill it) with the massive torque a diesel engine produces and Euro 6 emissions will help counter the high hydrocarbon prices which will be here to stay for quite a while.

The cash cow will be genetically modified to continue as a massive source of tax revenue. As one method of tax reduces so will others increase/ be invented to compensate.
From what I remember, transport tax revenue subsidises more than directly related spending.
It was thus with Tobacco Duty where it took a long time for revenue to start dropping after taxes increased. The fewer smokers continued to generate revenue. It hit a plateau and then started falling.
The switch from ICE to EV is unlikely to meet the political schedule. Too expensive to buy, charging infrastructure not ready etc
I wonder when the Hydrogen power source will kick in, possibly making EV less attractive. JCB are developing H engines as EV versions are impractical.

There are a raft of nice little problems to be sorted with BEV.
1. Finding a charging point that is a) functioning, and b) not occupied.
2. Charging in underground car parks in a condominium will require notification to insurance companies and probable increase in premiums
3. Most condominium garages do not have separately mettered power as most were built before BEVs became popular. Slow charging is possible on a normal 240 power point but why the hell should everyone share the electricity bill. Nobody other than me pays my fuel bill. In the case of MIL's apartment the general condominium electricity bill is up by over 1000 Kw hours by comparison the previous period, which clearly indicates someone is charging without permission.
4. Both fire and power authorities will have requirements relating to BEV charging.

Nothing will convince me that the current type of BEV is the solution. I will guarantee that in a few years they will suddenly have a bad name like diesel does today. Remember when we were all supposed to save the planet by switching to diesel? In the end it will be fuel cell technology that comes out on top; hydrogen or perhaps something else.

As it is at the moment we have insufficient renewable energy and a lot of what we do have is costly, not really all that environmentally friendly, and often inefficient. A good deal of the power generated to charge BEVs is coming from burning fossil fuels. At least hybrids burn said fossil fuels in situ when and if required without having the cost of transporting the current hundreds of kilometres from the source.

You'd have no difficulty finding somewhere to charge your EV where I live, the council have just installed rows and rows of them. I've yet to see anyone using one though.
The only person I know with an EV, a Porsche Taycan sport tourismo which was £100k, bought it for the tax break. He saves £20k on his income tax at the same time as the car has increased in value. We live slap bang in the center of the country where all our electric is coming from fossil fuels so no real eco advantage at all.
