I'd like to overhaul the carb on my 1600 Xflow as I have no idea what condition it is in (also gives me something to tinker with!). Anyone done this and can recommend an overhaul kit. There seem to be loads of them at greatly varying prices. The car seems a little sluggish. Ignition seems accurate and stable , has new leads and plugs so thought I'd look at the fuel side as that is a bit of an unknown at the moment.

Look on eBay for ‘fast road’ they do a kit for under £30, fast service and a guy you can talk to. The kit is easy to fit, lay the parts on a clean surface and clean the chokes and or replace the jets and diaphragm in the kit. Good luck Mark

Check the throttle shaft too - the bearings can wear, creating air leaks. There are replacements available: eBay - Throttle Bearing Kit

Cheaper/easier buy a new carb than fiddle about rebuilding an old one
A new one was about 175 quid plus VAT last time I bought one
Just bolted it on and adjusted the accelerator cable
Perfect carburation!
If you are going to overhaul your existing carb, get the genuine Webcon overhaul kit. Also make sure the kit has the nylon fuel filter which fits under tge brass hex plug as some do and some don't
Also check the whole of the fuel line as well as the fuel pump to see that the fuel is getting through OK. Its not unknown for the fuel pump cam or lever to wear limiting what is actually delivered to the pump resulting sluggish performance
New mechanical pumps aren't that expensive but may have been manufactured prior to E10 fuel or even better go to an electric pump

Might be worth checking if anyone does an E10 compatible rebuild set ... would seem to make sense as you don't rebuild a carb every day and who knows where the fuel thing is heading .... already our local 24hr stations are at supermarkets and don't do E5

All good useful stuff, thanks.
Arwyn, Webcon service kit about £55. New carb, £206. Certainly easier just to swap but I can use that £150 more efficiently. Thanks for the advise about the fuel pump, I'll check for wear.
The whole E10 is a nightmare. A complete overhaul of the whole system (including fuel tank)would be needed if I was contemplating making it E10 proof. Currently using Shell V Power as I have a Shell station at the end of my road.
Question: Are all 32/36 carbs jetted the same?

I too cant resist the temptaion to take things to bits whether really needed or not. I once took a head off my old Stag just to see the state of the bores even though it wasnt using oil. A week or two later ( I wont go into the reasons) I had all the front suspension off and the sump dropped. There was nothing wrong of course. On the same car I couldnt resist taking the auto gearbox to bits to see how it worked. And surprisingly, it still did work when I put it back together. I reckon its inherited disease. My father left me lots of little pots of watch bits where he had taken them to pieces - he wasnt that good at the reverse operation.

That's the trick though isn't it. Putting it back together again and IT STILL WORKS!

Make sure that the overhaul kit is ethanol proof, even if using E5. I overhauled the Weber ADF on our car a few weeks ago using a new old stock, still sealed, genuine Weber, kit - 50 miles later car wouldn't idle and I found that the "new" rubber seals had cracked.
