There is no earth on the hydraulic brake switch on this car. It's just a switch, power in power out.

I replaced the bulbs and inspected the sockets. All good.
I checked all the connections in the rear of the car and everything seems fine there. And all the Earth's look good to. I checked ohm readings from earth in the socket to the frame and that is good.
When I have both bulbs out I checked the sockets with a meter, and everything there is working properly.
The issue is when the side lights are on and the brake pedal is pushed. It must be a problem with one wire somewhere, but I haven't found it yet Could be water or moisture getting in somewhere which causes a short or electrical mayhem when you turn the lights on, therefore giving power to the moist area.

It must be a problem with one wire somewhere, but I haven't found it yet Despite your tests with a meter, I would still suggest that you get a long piece of insulated wire and connect one end directly onto the earth terminal of the battery. Then attach the other end directly to the body of the brake light bulb holder on each side and see if it makes a difference.

If all is good with the rear wiring and fittings, I'd check the front sidelights. Try removing the right bulb, then check, and then the left one. Might help isolate the problem. IIRC the wiring to the rear lights is on two circults (I presume so you have at least one side working if there's a failure.

Ok re brake Swithch, adding to Leroy's missive, my old 4/4 had an issue with lights doing random stuff, I traced it down to a clear rectangular relay behind the middle of the dash which semed to screenwash in it from the pipe leaking into it. Very disconcerting on the M20 at night returning from France when all the dash and lights kept going off and on.
