I have just had a bonnet strap fitted and have a few general maintenance questions.

Firstly, how to maintain and clean the strap? I assume something like Autoglym Leather Balm will do the job well enough?

Secondly, and this might seem an obvious or stupid question, what do you do with the strap when cleaning the car? Leave it belted up and wash over it or untie it, in which case, does it matter if the underside of the strap gets wet and soapy in the process? Should I wait for the underside to fully dry before belting it up again.

Any other tips for living with bonnet straps?

Mine doesn't have the lambs wool underside and sits on paint protection film. The bonnet is also polished alloy.

My previous car had one with lambs wool till I took it off , that had worn the paint off the top of the louvres.

I use a leather cleaner & balm when I annually treat the leather. I usually undo it to wash the car & I clean the underside of the leather. You don't want grit in the lambs wool as it will grind of the paint.

I vacuum the lambs wool side and protect the leather side with Nikwax. I suppose you could shampoo the lambs wool and dry it with a hairdryer?

I have also found that my new black strap has ugly defacing white marks on it. Oils coming out of the leather perhaps - known as spew or blooming?

Yes, it’s the natural oils coming out. Try a hair dryer

Hair dryer does not remove them unfortunately. I have ordered some cream on Amazon which removes leather spew. Hoping that will work.

I just have a plain leather strap with helicopter tape under it .... just fitted, but as I have horses I intend to use one of the one hundred and twenty different leather treatments I've acquired over the years that are all supposed to be just the very thing for tack.
