Hi all, we finally passed the MOT test and got the newly acquired 1973 +8 RHD on the road. However, to the annoyance of especially my wife, we find the extend of exhaust fumes in the cabin excessive. True, it's not very nice. We feel kind of intoxicated and our clothes and hair is smelling afterwards. I predict that wife will not go on longer trips in the Moggie. Arrg...Many others must have encountered this. How to rectify it? The Mog does have a big bore system with rather long rear tail pipes. Install an after market catatalytic converter? New plugs? Carburettor adjustments..? Cheers /Finn

Or side pipes. Fumes get swept away then.

I have struggled over the years with the same problem. (1980 +8) . Extended the rear pipes, but then kept catching my legs when walking around the back or filling with fuel. But found the only option is side pipes. Be warned though they are louder.

Thx for your replies. I've been thinking of side pipes, but what about slow driving in cities etc. Won't it go right into the face of the occupants?

Our 2011 3.0 litre Roadster - side pipes from new - no fumes in cabin or excess noise.
Good Luck

Thx for your replies. I've been thinking of side pipes, but what about slow driving in cities etc. Won't it go right into the face of the occupants? No because they point downwards slightly. They don't need to add excessive noise either. At idle mine are near silent and only turn into a banshee wail from the V6 above 3500 rpm when the VVT cuts in.

Mine has side pipes for exactly the same reason. Fitted the rear pipes and got exhaust smell. Side pipes and no smell. Make a fine noise too especially in tunnels.
Very easy to adapt and fit and reversible too
2012 Plus 4 in Sport Green. Much comfier than the Plus 8!

The side pipes solution is a good one, but the noise can be louder under certain circumstances. If this proves too much get some different silencers with more packing in them to give better sound absorption.
You can experiment by getting a couple of 90 Deg curved end pipes made up cheaply and just trying them. If you find that this solution suits you then get them done in stainless.
Personally I like the noise generated by side pipes (like Richard !) but it is a personal choice.
On my racing +4 I had a long pipe system with a good silencer , but the system developed a resonance and would fail noise tests at circuits like Zanndvort and Goodwood. I changed the system to a +8 silencer and a side exit just in front the rear wheel , and the system was a lot quieter , no resonance, I passed all the noise meter tests first time, and it was fine on the road. As Richard says it is no more noisy in steady state than the standard system , but will be louder under acceleration.

Chrome curved endpipe screw on fittings available on eBay, I fitted them on a car and directed the fumes 45 degrees out to side. Worked well. But fumes are always a problem even if the modern cars don't emit odour. On my last 4/4 I could smell exhaust starting from cold but not once the catalysts warmed up. But the airflow remains the same Nick
