Think I've read Nightfall, many years ago  Anything by Asimov is worth reading, Graham. And Arthur C. Clarke.

I very much enjoyed the 3-Body Problem books by Cixin Liu. A bit scary though if you give the 'Dark Forest' theory any credence.
As a massive Iain M Banks fan I like to think there's a Special Circumstances Contact team from the Culture keeping an eye on us in case we show signs of becoming properly civilised.

I very much enjoyed the 3-Body Problem books by Cixin Liu. A bit scary though if you give the 'Dark Forest' theory any credence.
As a massive Iain M Banks fan I like to think there's a Special Circumstances Contact team from the Culture keeping an eye on us in case we show signs of becoming properly civilised. Iain M Banks was great. Consider Phlebas and The player of Games are my favourites. Alastair Reynolds revelation Space books are terrific as well. Unlike Banks, he's a "hard" sci-fi writer which means that everything he writes about must be scientifically explained and plausible.

Alastair Reynolds revelation Space books are terrific as well.
You're the second person who has recommended Reynolds to me in the last month. I'll have a look at him.

Have you also heard of the Black Widowers? Tales of the Black Widowers, Bob? Yes, if I'm correct its a collection of detective stories by Asimov. I have not read it though as I'm more of a Sci-Fi nerd than a detective one. Try them, they have the same sense of Asimov humour and are very clever, as you would expect.

I usually enjoy anything by Asimov. You know Asimov and Arthur C Clarke had a treaty. It stated that that Asimov had to say that Arthur C. Clarke was the best science fiction writer in the world (reserving second best for himself), while Clarke had to insist that Isaac Asimov was the best science writer in the world (reserving second best for himself). So the dedication in Clarke's book Report on Planet Three reads "In accordance with the terms of the Clarke-Asimov treaty, the second-best science writer dedicates this book to the second-best science-fiction writer".

I can recommend a really brilliant short science fiction story by Isaac Asimov about this. Its called Nightfall and its widely regarded as one of the greatest Sci-Fi short stories. The ending is superb and a bit of a shocker - I won't give it away (unless you really want me to). I have found the book in the web in German „Einbruch der Nacht“. I learned it is not the short story. This novel has about 330 pages and appeared around 1990. The short story is from 1941, so far Wikipedia, Anyway I will read the novel unless you say the short story is the better choice.

The novel is padded out, but still a good book. You could read both - but read the short story first.
