sorry also I meant to say that the auto electrician suggested adding a relay to cut the current going to the switch as he wondered if the dim dip unit had a unit in it to reduce current to the switch. I was about to say also add a relay.

Definitely add a relay! The switch just can't handle the current otherwise.
I had exactly the same problem on my '91 4/4 after the Dim Dip was removed.
