Thx for your replies. I checked the plugs - NGK BP6HS which I assume are the correct ones for a 1973 +8 with std SU carbs - and they looks fine. Coffee latte coloured and dry which indicates a correct mixture in my opinion. What do you think?

I think you have a choice of following advice on here, and sort out your exhaust exit point, or the advice from the expert on Morgan Experience and completely rebuild your carbs and lean them out even further

I test drove an early maroon Plus 8 at a Devon dealers (Phoenix Motors on Woodbury Common) several years ago and long before BB appeared on the scene, it was an ex Dron car, which brother escapes me now. The stench from the non cat exhaust flooding the cockpit was unbelievable quite how anyone could live with it was beyond me. Good luck with your side pipes

Do let us know if the problem is solved and how it sounds. It's a thing I have considered on mine but some say you only get to hear the pipe on your side of the car, my Librands Sport dual system is fairly vocal..

That's what I've heard too, you'll hear half a V8.... not exactly why you acquired a +8 after all....

That's what I've heard too, you'll hear half a V8.... not exactly why you acquired a +8 after all.... Ok, I've wondered this before, on the one hand it helps if you use a side exhaust outlet against exhaust fumes being sucked into the interior from the rear by aerodynamics. Incidentally, this was one of the reasons I sold my Plus4 Supersport, even though there was better engine programming later that made for cleaner exhaust. Now my idea, if side V8 exhaust pipes exit to both sides, then it will be that on the side where you sit you will hear an unsightly intermittent half 4 cylinder sound, raspy, tinny and screechy. The other side of the V8 remains unheard. To take advantage of both, wouldn't it be better to direct both sides of the exhaust manifolds to a single exit side? Then you would have clean air in the car and at the same time a great sound from a single source with two pipes close together.
