This is interesting.

I have my 2014 4/4 on a C-TEC conditioner. I plan to change the battery over the winter as I have never had a battery make 10 years without problems and so change them on 9 years as a matter of course.

My 2012 Discovery 4 which is used at least once a week is on its second battery - changed the old one out as a precaution at 9 years old as is my habit. It has never had a charger connected.

Yours,

Puzzled.

Is a C-TEC that bad.

I leave them on all my cars inc some that don’t turn a wheel for a year plus and never had an issue except when the stupid thing stops working.

One battery in particular is 12 years old (Merc) and still going strong

1. High power charger 10amp that is intended to re charge a flat but not dead battery quickly.
2. Trickle charger intended to bring it up to load overnight. Not to be left on or it will kill the battery as mentioned above.
3. Battery conditioner, c-tek 0.8 is the model I have, which charges and then loads it to maintain it. I am assuming these can be left connected.

Both Mogs were on conditioners.

In the first email I did not cover the isolator switch on the electrics box (in the engine bay above the pedals where all the fuses etc are) this switch is on the front of the box and will close off all power.

Some owners use this to extend the battery life by switching off all the electrics. I think this may affect some things like the permanent memory of the radio (unless you have run around it deliberately for this?) and could impact any trackers fitted depending on fitting, I am told they should not be affected but ahem....

My S2 can go weeks without needing a charge. The Coupe not so much, it would not do a week without being used or charge. Hence the use of conditioner on it.

@Volvo s60s60 - you mention using the AGM setting. When I read about modern AGM batteries they can handle more charge and load due to their construction. However for the Aero range I cannot find an AGM when I was replacing these or I would have bought one. I take it that AGM (as they can be used in the car etc) are "sealed" on the conditioners? Have you found an AGM in 075 size or did you change size to get it?

A good compromise would be a smart, multi-stage charger with a max output around 4 amps such as this inexpensive one.

If the car is used regularly, say once every two weeks and for a journey of at least 20 miles total (important) then maybe using the charger as a top up once every couple of months for 24 hours should offer longevity. Obviously excessive static battery drain due to fault or poor design needs to be alleviated with battery switch though.

There seems to be physc within Morgan circles that buying the most expensive charger and using with the most exotic battery will offer dividends. Time and again I see this proven to be rubbish though. Use of car and charger, when needed, is what counts.

My CTEK 5.0 charger is excellent, keeps my Roadster battery in tip-top condition and it always starts first time. It is also good value for money IMHO. However I previously wasted almost as much on buying a CTEK 0.8 which was useless at maintaining the previous (older) battery. My advice if anyone is in the market for a CTEK is to study the specs and user reviews carefully before parting with your money. And ask yourself if your car’s battery is even slightly like a motorcycle battery, which the 0.8 will cope with.

Hi Alistair

The AGM battery I use is an Odyssey Extreme PC925 (recently redesignated ODS-AGM28L but is the same item).

Hope this helps

As has been pointed out AGM batteries require a different float charger regeim to maintain them relative to their requirements than older type non-AGM batteries. I have both types of CTEK chargers which seem to operate well enough, Ihe AGM one ( MXS 5.0) can be seen to operate in pulse mode every so often, which I suppose may be to reduce the chance of sulphation that Richard typed of.. The one attached to the Mog with it`s old style non-AGM battery has no such pulse indication.

The Maypole charger I linked to has standard and AGM modes as well as winter mode for each, when slightly higher voltages can be accommodated to advantage. Both modes use pulse charging when deemed necessary as part of the automated charge profile.

Worth mentioning it switches automatically to accommodate 6 volt batteries as well.

I've got a couple - one on the Mog and one for the tintop. My tintop has some dodgy electrics and the battery will flatten in a week if left.

My only criticism is that if the tintop battery drops to below 6volts, it will only charge up to 6V as it assumes it's a 6V battery. It won't allow me to select 12V. I have to jump start her first, to get the volts up a bit before the Maypole will kick in.

Sounds like a bargain at that price with all those modes
