I'm very ignorant about this...can someone tell me if the biggest profit ever just announced by Centrica in news this morning has anything to do with the next news item which said that average energy bill will be £500 a month which no paye employee can possibly afford?
Really, I'd like to understand how two stories like this can appear on bbc radio without a civil war errupting?

Agreed. The govt must love the tax income as they steal a %

Mum's bill is over £600 per month at the moment. Luckily she no longer has a mortgage. The house does not have a gas supply, so it's just one huge electricity bill, ironically with British Gas!

Our house is heated by oil as we live out in the sticks, so coupled with the cost of electricity that very much makes you wince. The price of home heating oil is now hovering around £1.05p per litre 8 months ago it was just under 0.60p per litre.. we get through 2500 litres a year and this is in a house which is now insulated to max. Not looking forward to the winter bills.

Mum has a small oil-fired Rayburn. The recent oil delivery was cheaper than the last one, which was in March I think, but probably still around £1 per litre.

It needs the whole country to cancel their direct debits.

Yes, but does anyone know exactly the relationship between centrica and the cost of our energy?
Or the realtionship between centrica and the government?

Average weekly earnings are around £600 (https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentan...tain/latest#average-weekly-earnings-data I presume that's before tax & NI, it's not explicitly clear in the narrative)

So after tax that energy bill is a quarter of the average person's £2000 a month earnings
https://www.income-tax.co.uk/after-tax/

A
Quarter

sheesh... how is this not cutting through?

We have a freind who is a carer on minimum wage. Last winter she heated the lounge with a gas fire & had an elctric heat lamp in the bathroom. She couldn't afford more . God knows how she will cope this winter. The govet needs to act & act fast.
