Am I missing something ? our Audi A1 returns 60 mpg and petrol here is £1.60 a litre thats approx 12p per mile. I would say that what you are missing possibly is that many people aren't switching to EVs for solely economic reasons. Some of us actually want to reduce our carbon footprint. Consider for example that each gallon of petrol you put in your car has already consumed about 6KWh of electricity in its production, which is enough to take an EV 25 miles or so.

So did I, but if we are on the EV thing then the costs & hidden pollution form the batteries is also a factor. Hydrogen would be the best as you are not lugging a ton or so of batteries about.

Fair enough. If we focus on running costs, then for a complete picture we should also factor in taxation, insurance, and servicing too, and that takes my Defender up really quite a lot higher than the Mini. I don't think anyone has ever claimed every type of EV is cheaper to run than every type of ICE vehicle, though. Clearly your Audi is currently working out cheaper to run than a similar EV In my case, I compare the running costs of the vehicles I own.

Absolutely true, but then we would need to include the environmental costs of prospecting, drilling, extraction, transport, refining, and distribution of petroleum into the equation. When you do that, the issue swings very clearly towards EVs as the oil extraction industry is so damaging. I believe the ultimate solution will involve a mix of many technology and ownership types. For many users, especially those with local solar generation capabilities, BEVs make a great deal of sense as they can be charged cheaply and range is not an issue. For those who need to regularly travel long distances, hydrogen may well prove to be a good solution - as i suspect it will for heavy goods transport. For some, who only rarely need a long-distance car and don't have the time to stop for recharging en route, then a car-sharing scheme in which they can book a long-range vehicle for a specific date could also be a good idea. I don't think there's any need to focus on a 'one size fits all' solution.

Exactly Hydrogen would begin to interest me with the necessary battery interface assuming current technology has not replaced it with an Electolytic super capacitor by then, I live in hope I will not require either but always take an interest in the technology just in case. Running three ICE units one of which is a V8 tbh I'd feel more than a little hypocritical running a pure EV as a replacement for any of them, besides my family and mates would rip the piss out of me something chronic..

We should bypass all that and go here straight away as that's where it will end sooner rather than later.. I would prefer a Classic wooden gig though K and Mrs K are well ahead of the game in not being interested in electric and have their mounts already in full use ![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2017/08/18/VW.jpg)

It saddens me when we are all trying to do our bit to protect the world by becoming carbon neutral, and yet the Russians are burning off $10m worth of gas each day. The damage to climate and the earth is beyond belief.

You have to hope for a GE but Turkeys don't vote for Xmas & they will I hope get a strong message from us when a GE happens. The standing charge is increasing from 37.92 p to 46p per day for electricity and for gas from 27.72 p per day to 28p per day at respectively 7.34 p per kWh going up to 15 p per kWh.
Why the standing charge is increasing is beyond me I heard on the radio yesterday someone saying that some of it is used to fund the cost of customer transfers from all these small providers going pop, the Big Six get peed off with all the admin, so have to get a little £tickle£ for each one they are forced to take on, hence the large increase Don't know how true it is ?
