it is used to fund the cost of customer transfers from all these small providers going pop Yep, once again (as with the banks) the government is using taxpayer's money to prop up failed businesses. If we're paying for them, why aren't the Government getting shares in exchange?

I'll let you know what the winter costs next year, the last two years 14,000 miles has cost me a shade under £190 as totally charged at home with mix of ev tariff and solar/battery storage. As a side note my XC60 diesel barely managed 37mpg on my commute. I think that would have cost a bit more

Everyone will have their own unique use-case when comparing running costs. I switched from a supercharged Range Rover to a Tesla for commuting purposes and have saved a considerable amount over the past 22,000 miles. The Tesla is currently costing 6p a mile Vs 44p a mile in the RR. Even with the October 1st price cap, the EV will still be significantly cheaper. Added to which there's no servicing, road tax or congestion charge.... at the moment at least.
But the gap is closing for more 'normal' comparisons. At 52p per kWh (the new October rate I think) the price per mile will rise to around 13p, still cheaper than the RR - but in the range of an awful lot of ICE engines. It could cause a dip in EV sales for those in the market for a new car and comparing running costs.

Sobering thought that. I thought EVs were pollution free & the electricity magically made itself. Someone somewhere is making a shedload of cash. The cap I understood from the Beeb is based purely on gas prices i.e. it assumes the cost / kWh of electricity made from a generation plant run on gas. Why oh why then aren't we seeing a discount if like me you buy supposedly 100% renewable power implying no gas is used? I thought renewables are well over a third of our power generation & their generation costs should be static / not rising as fast as gas.
Also the power companies are paying peanuts now for PV solar on the FIT tarrif. I get £0.0741 per kWh and they sell it at £0.52. Whichever person the new PM is I hope they get a grip on this rip off. When you sell your house or your car, do you sell them at the best price you can get in the market or at what they cost you? Why do you expect any businessman to think differently?

Difference being that in selling your house you are taking part in a classical 'capitalist' fragmented market where supply and demand rules apply ... the energy market is a 'corporatist' one where a small number of large corporations can dictate prices to a captive market .... and operate a de-facto or overt cartel (OPEC anyone?) ... when they are making record profits while consumers are squeezed there will be justifiable calls for regulation/control/taxation.

Many cooperate pension funds rely on such incomes so it's swings and roundabout for many I think. tbh the media have talked this thing up out of very little hard knowledge, lets wait and see, I don't envisage having to sell the Plus 8 anyway
