I think I was on that 2% all last week.

In fairness to motorists, the cyclists were treated very respectfully and cars would only pass if there was significant amount of room to do so. I saw no close calls, or dangerous maneovures. However, when you are on B roads, and there is a large group of lycra clad ninnies riding three abreast, it makes an overtake virtually impossible hence huge queues dragging along at a snails pace.

Respect works both ways - most of the slow moving vehicles in the area (buses, tractors etc) seemed happy to pull in and let the queues clear, but not the cyclists.

I also followed the highway code and only passed when it was very safe to do so, although my Mrs had to keep reminding me that we were in an open top vehicle and people can hear me more easily. Still, it's always good to learn new words. :} :}

California have a good law:

Quote
any vehicle moving slower than the normal speed of traffic at that time, with five or more vehicles behind it, must turn off at the nearest place with signs designating it as a turnout, or wherever there is a safe place to do so. Bicycles are specifically included in the law. Normally, bicyclists who are moving at a lower speed than the main flow of traffic must keep as close as is safe to the right-hand edge of the roadway. But when roadway conditions, including fixed or moving objects, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or narrow lanes, make it unsafe for a bike to keep close to the edge, the cyclist must follow the slow-moving vehicles law and pull over into designated turnouts if at least five vehicles are trailing him or her.

As I cycle around the narrow leafy lanes of my new Suffolk home, gradually increasing my mileage and speed on each journey as I build up my bike-fitness again after being distracted for a while by the moving and settling-in activity, I'll often have cars come up behind me so simply pull over when appropriate and safe to do so. If it's a tractor I'll pull onto a verge if it's safe. I always get a friendly wave from the motorists involved (with the exception of one miserable looking bus driver the other day for whom I have pulled over well before he reached me!). When I'm in the car I'll hold back and wait for a safe place to overtake any cyclists I come across. It's easy and stress free and I can carry on and enjoy my drive as before. It's all good old common sense and courtesy. Yes, I'm sure there are some belligerent cyclists out there as there are many aggressive and simply bad motorists - I just refuse to let them spoil my life or annoy me. Life really is too short for that.

I think if there is respect on both sides it works. Cyclists breaking the law by going on off pavements, through red lights or not using cycle lanes wind me up.
Yesterday on a steep hill up to Sutton Hoo there was a loaded touring tandem. I hung back till safe to overtake and got a nice thank you wave. It doesn't take much to be considerate.

Another 250 miles from Evreux to Vannes, a sailing haunt from more than half a lifetime ago. Had to take a cheesy pic

We stopped at the wonderfully tranquil Lonlay-l'Abbaye

Of the photos we took in Vannes, these might be of interest. The cat was at least 40' across and has some distinguished battle honours

I should add that even with SSL-assisted medium-soft suspension, Morgan Trads, French C roads and an old back are not an ideal combination.
