Can't imagine you could get a set of titanium studs for £12 either

I have read the warnings before on Stainless, and it does seem that all stainless might not be to the same spec. I do not profess to know the tensile strengths of marine grade (316 ?) or any others, but on sail boats there are stainless fittings and fixings subjected to considerable loads..?

Also if I might add there were rather a lot of stainless fixings used around my +8 when it was rebuilt some 20 years ago... as to their grade, I have no idea. My +8`s exhaust manifolds are held in place by stainless set screws and having read on the www of numerous tales of SS seizing into alloy heads, I checked a few of my manifold set screws in the recent past, and they came undone without issue having been holding the manifold for more than 20 years.

Having typed the above I have also seen many stainless fixings seized solid into alloy when exposed to the weather in non-automotive situations.


I am also aware of the watercooled Porsche exhaust fixing issues and the various methods or resolving them.

I kinda like the idea of studs with nuts. In times past the nuts were brass thus unlikely to seize... With nuts and studs you may have a better chance of getting a nut off without sheerng a stud whereas with set screws, I guess sheering is ever a possibility, more so if they are made of the same metal Porsche seem to prefer..!

Replaced a rocker cover seal, and whilst the cover was off torque up the cam shaft retaining bolts. About 5 needed tightening slightly.

4 studs came out with some effort. One has sheared in the head.

Some comfort that it's one of the central ones that had to come out - I'd be kicking myself if it was one of the outer ones.

I reckon there's sufficient room to attempt a drill out and possible clean up or helicoil in situ. If it's proving difficult, I'll whip the head off.

Lots of vids on the www on removing head bolts by all sorts of methods.. I have made use of numerous helicoils, though Timeserts seem to be well favoured..?

Success. Thankfully it is an open hole, so have managed to drill out the old one. Bit of filing to get rid of some of the remnants and have ordered the relevant Helicoil set. Will also need to clean up the threads on the other stud holes as they are full of crud too.....

And now I've cleaned up the hole with a file, there is a fighting chance that I can restore the standard threads with a tap. Which I haven't got so have ordered one.

Did you order the complete set? Taper, Plug, and Bottoming taps...

Yep - and if they don't work, I still have the Helicoil.
