I had the same access problem, solved by an angled nipple, available straight, 45 degrees or 90 degrees from your local motor factor

an update Taffog and Ivanford:-
Taffmog, I have purchased a straight and a 90 degree nipple from a local motor factor. I guess they do not get many requests for these as they were not able to tell me the sizes so I guessed.
Before fitting them I took Ivanford's suggestion and inserted a washer on the original one and I can now connect the grease gun
without removing the damper. I'll keep them for future use.

Angled nipples do the job very well, especially if you fit AVO shock absorbers, which do not leave enough room to access the straight nipples.
To get the angled nipples to point in the direction you want, you may need to use a brass washer.
