I never used the big hovercraft, but used to regularly use the small passenger one to Ryde, IOW.

It was I guess 1986 as my first son was getting christened back in the UK. The seats from memory were divided one half smokers, one half non smokers. We don't smoke but in those days you got a good dose. The inside just like the lining of my dad's cars was coated in nictone and the air canned.

When it hit a wave it could slide in any direction. We spent I guess 1 hr outisde dover harbour & went back to rebalance the load. Then we had a 90 min or so crossing. The world stop moving after we got through Belgium into Germany. I guess 3 hrs aftr getting off.

We never used it again

Yep ... did the cross Channel one once only ... the combination of the stuffy, machinery-smelling cabin and the choppy movement was truly nauseating ... didn't throw up but it was a close thing .... quick, but went back to the boat after that.

Stopped touring in Europe before the train started (on the basis of road-tripping interesting but dodgier places while young and fit then back to relatively cushy European travelling when less resilient) but will probably try the tunnel .... though there's something about driving onto the ferry that still says 'Holiday!!' to me 🙂
