Similar experience with a mk 1 Vauxhall Astra. It had a hose from the air filter down onto a collector on the manifold that rusted and was pulled off and chucked. After two or three late night winter breakdowns I got a replacement from the local scrapyard. Problem solved.

Remember when folk used to tie a piece of cardboard over part of the front grille in winter ?

We even had a sort of shallow drum paraffin heater that you lit overnight and shoved under the engine

When I worked in Canada there was a plug in the front of the car which had a heater in the sump you plugged into the 110volt supply overnight.

Anyone remember those black plastic covers on the grille that you could progressively un popper as conditions allowed.

In Norway every car has a 230V heater. I tried a long time to find such heater that I coult make fitting to my CX500.

When I was about 18 and driving a Sunbeam Rapier which had no garage I used to leave a small parafin lamp thing under the engine in winter. Anyone remember those?
