Our mutt is on MiPet Active Advance... based on "green lipped mussel" and fish oil ("Omega 3 fatty acids to soothe joints", plus some glucosamine and manganese ("support function and structure of joints"), hyaluronic acide ("lubricate and cushion joints"), and vitamins C and E ("to neutralize free radicals" which sounds like an Iranian Government plot to me!)

At the cost of upsetting posters, I could not countenance bills of £1000 for treatment for a pet dog. We seem to have got into a cycle whereby people insuure their pets then the vets jack up prices knowing there is insurance and owners go for the sort of treatments the NHS gives to human beings. Its out of all proportion. Just how sentimental can we get?

I love my dog Max dearly, but when it gets to multi hundred vets bills he will be put down.

I suspect if we can justify spending many thousands of pounds on a Classic car, then I can see where man`s best friend can be thought to be worth spending ones reserves of cash upon to keep it alive and comfortable in it`s old age.

I like many have watched the extended ending to life of family members which medical science and the law combine to create a situation where if similar treatment might be applied to an animal, could be deemed by law as a form of cruelty...?

I have watched TV following animal welfare officials entering peoples homes whereby such were the combined living conditions provided by the humans for themselves and their dog that they were considered by law to be below acceptable standards for the dog, which was then removed to kennels to be better cared for by the animal protection agency....Kinda makes you think a bit as to where to draw lines...?

Please don't do that. If you can't be bothered to pay for your pets healthcare, please take him to a rescue centre where they will look after him. However, I accept that you're probably a bit bored and have only come on TM to troll.

Back to the OP - we have a giant rabbit with a hip issue (common with these). He is on Loxicom or Metacam daily (dog strength, he's a big lad) - the pain relief means he functions fairly normally. You can only get it on prescription, but the vet gives us a 5x repeat written prescription and we order from an online pet drugs site which keeps the costs down.

My sister was a vet (before succumbing to cancer). The real world cost of drugs and medical equipment is not supported by government subsidy (a la NHS). This stuff is expensive.

As a Humanist, I agree with legalised euthanasia.

My cats get all needed vet treatments and huge consideration and adjustment from us in order to be happy and comfortable as they get older .... however their time will come and the hard decision will be made with their welfare at heart .... though to be fair to Howard I see plenty of pets with poor quality of life dragging themselves about and being kept alive for the benefit of sentimental owners rather than what's best for them.
