Arwyn, do you think there is an advantage to replacing the rear Armstrongs with a more conventional unit, like Avos?

Yes, did it last year or year before and it completely transformed the rear end! Feels more planted and stable now.

Though check with TBM as he had a mod done to his Armstrongs which transformed the handling but retained the Armstrong dampers.

Might have a set of Rutherford type brackets coming in a pile of 4/4 parts I have just bought.

I also picked up a T-9 5 speed the other day. They are as rare as hen's teeth over here. I'll install it someday, but it has to be gone through first. Needs a shift and a short input shaft, maybe a different first gear ratio. There's a guy near here that does all British gearbox work, so I'll let him look it over. Might not go in this year, maybe next.

Have a T-9 5 speed in mine and it's a very pleasant drive .... had it rebuilt by a local rally preparation man (who's also a hillclimb paddock mate) .... you will need a different prop shaft but they're usually not too expensive to have made up if you can't find one .... an issue is that the speedo cable comes out sideways and fouls the transmission tunnel ... cured with a 90° drive converter from Burton Power .... requires a different speedo cable but having one made to suit was cheap .... well worth the effort!

TBM and Arwyn have both fitted them recently and will be able to keep you right 🙂

Can I reuse the prop shaft?

My winter jobs aren't too demanding with my new to me 1957 Plus 4. It needs new brake linings on all 4 wheels (drums all round). There is a reasonably local company that relines brake shoes for a reasonable cost.
Whilst the wheels and drums are off, I need to investigate why the rear wheels are warm after a run. Note that the fronts are not. I am very gentle on the brakes, no sprited driving.
I will be replacing the engine and gearbox oil (I believe Redline MT-90 is best for the Moss box)
The tricky one will be getting the fuel gauge to work, the sender has a broken wire. I think I can sort it, but I am not as dexterous as I was . Currently I have to use a calibrated dip stick to check the fuel level.
Other than those jobs, just a bit of tinkering when it's not too cold in the garage, and the odd run out if the weather is OK.

Unfortunately not, T9 gearbox output shaft is different to the 4 speed output shaft so the propshaft end will need to be changed. Also propshaft needs to be shortened a bit. Can't remember how much by or how I calculated it!

I had a feeling. We have a good propshaft company near us.

Pulling out the dash board for refinishing, sending the speedo out for repair and calibration, removing the bonnet halves and having them stripped and refinished, also cleaning up the scoop flange where it attaches to the bonnet to make room for an air cleaner to fit over the stacks, and installing a new shifter on the T9 gearbox. I've also been in contact with Intatrim, so I might be installing bucket seats; black leather with red piping.

Where are you getting the shift?
